Snapshot from Tier III 432f Transforming Leadership with Emotional Intelligence - A Writing-Enriched Course
By: Dr. Mary Tucker

Writing Assignments: Detailed instructions for writing projects are given in the course syllabus and handout packet. Examples of exemplary work are also provided. Although format is structured, reading responses are writing-to-learn activities and not graded for grammar or structure.

Training modules are peer critiqued and briefly reviewed by professor before final deliverable is graded. Reading responses are incorporated into the final report, which is graded for content and correctness. Other writing assignments, i.e., presentation, memo, interview, action plan, and online discussions have a major focus on writing to learn. The course handout packet and class time are devoted to instruction in writing so that students are provided the information needed to be successful writers in this class.

Reading Responses. Each student will complete a readings response for each article assignment Students will keep copies of all these responses to compile a response journal. This journal assists students in composing a final synthesis paper.

Leadership and Emotional Intelligence Assessments and Evaluation Memo. This is short report memo (2-3 single-spaced pages, with headings) to me about what students discovered about themselves

Training Module Based on Book and Training Session PowerPoint Presentation. Each student is responsible for developing a training module (ten single-spaced pages) and training PowerPoint presentation on one book from the resource list. Books will be awarded on a “first-come” basis the first day of class or will be assigned by the professor. The training module will be based on some key aspects of the book and is to include the training purpose, objectives, outline and supporting materials, including the PowerPoint slides for the training presentation. An example training module is posted in the Bb course Document Database.

Peer Critiques of Training Modules. Training Modules will be posted to the class database so that individuals may critique an assigned module. Each person will develop a set of evaluation criteria and provide a thoughtful critique. An exceptional critique will be thorough in assessing the positives and providing feedback (with referenced examples) for how to improve the module.

Leader Interview. The interview results in a 3-5 page paper (single-spaced, with appropriate headings) that includes thoughts and opinions on what the leader said.
