Creative Research
Grants, Research and Funding
Ohio University offers a number of resources for funding research, creative work, and scholarly activity. In addition, the College of Fine Arts provides funding to support creative work, scholarship, and research. The office of the Vice President for Research provides valuable information about external as well as internal funding sources.
The following links provide information about internal and external funding opportunities for faculty and staff. If you would like additional information or need assistance with a proposal, please contact Jody Lamb, Associate Dean.
College Of Fine Arts Funding Opportunities:
- Professional Activity Fund
Full time Group I and Group IV faculty are eligible to apply for funding to support the following activities: presentation of papers, workshops, exhibitions, shows, recitals, performances, and similar activities where the faculty member is directly invited to participate. All projects must be pre-approved for funding. Funding varies, depending on support from the Director of the School, usually $200 - $350 for domestic and up to $450 for international travel. Please refer to the guidelines for additional information.
- Creative Research Awards
Annual competitive awards to promote and encourage creative research in the arts. Proposals will be reviewed by the College of Fine Arts Graduate and Research Committee and will be evaluated on the basis of merit and importance to the field. After the committee forwards their recommendations, the Dean will make the final decision on awards. This award can be valued at several thousand dollars, not to exceed $7,500, depending on the proposal and the funds available. Please refer to the guidelines for additional information.
University Research Support:
- Ohio University Research Committee (OURC) Chair’s Discretionary Fund
Small awards are made for research, scholarly and creative activity as a result of a direct request of the OURC chair.
- Faculty Research Support
Assists tenure track faculty in carrying out their research, scholarship and creative activities by providing support for publication and subvention, travel support, and emergency equipment repair funds. The fund does not support conference travel of any kind.
University Competitive Awards:
- Research Enhancement
Each year the VP for Research provides an allocation of funds to deans’ offices to assist junior faculty in getting their research started at Ohio University. The intent is to provide promising junior researchers with salary support for their first summer month at OU in order to focus on establishing their research efforts. Contact the dean’s office for specific applications and guidelines.
- Ohio University Research Committee (OURC)
OURC makes funds available to all faculty and staff as seed money for new projects and support for projects where no other funding is available or where a special funding need has developed. Priority is placed on supporting faculty who are new to Ohio University. Because funds are limited, the OURC must limit the scope and size of its awards. For projects on which progress has been made, investigators should consider an application to the Baker Fund.
- Baker Fund Awards
The Baker Funds Awards Committee (BAC) has one funding cycle per year (typically in the winter quarter) for proposals that support research, scholarship, and creative activity. All regular tenured and tenure-track members of the faculty and full-time continuing administrative staff at all Ohio University campuses are eligible to submit proposals in any field of study. The scholarly, technical, or artistic merit of a proposed project is the primary criterion for evaluation. The committee seeks to support projects that are near completion and can be hopefully brought to full completion with the assistance of an award. All projects on which progress has been made are eligible for consideration.Requests for funds to initiate projects are more appropriately directed to the OURC.
- 1804 Fund
The 1804 Fund was established by the Ohio University Foundation Board of Trustees and supports the university’s core mission of maintaining, strengthening, and enhancing a learning-centered community. Such a community values and develops the teaching, learning, and research or scholarly activities of all its members. By its nature, the community promotes collaboration among units and interdisciplinary explorations and innovations.

External Funding Resources and Information:
- SPIN (Sponsored Programs Information Network)
SPIN is a computerized data base of federal, non-federal and corporate funding opportunities designed to assist faculty and staff in the identification of external sources of support for research, education and development projects. The data base is searchable using SPIN keywords, Sponsor name(s), Award type(s), Applicant Type(s), Geographic Region, and/or Deadline Date/Date Ranges. The subscription which is provided by the VP for Research as a service to the Ohio University community is accessible through Ohio University servers (only) to connect to the Internet.
- The Grant Advisor PLUS
Online resource for grants providing information to faculty affiliated with subscribing institutions (click on subscriber link to view current grant timelines). Available only when accessing the internet through an OU server.
- Ohio Arts Council
State agency that funds and supports quality arts experiences to strengthen Ohio communities culturally, educationally and economically. With funds from the Ohio Legislature and the National Endowment for the Arts, the OAC provides financial assistance to artists and arts organizations.

Provides announcements of grant opportunities in various disciplines, including Arts & Culture.

@ Lab
The Aesthetic Technologies Lab, also known as the @Lab, is the trans-disciplinary Research and Development unit of the College of Fine Arts.
The @Lab’s role is to provide the tools and resources to promote creative inquiry at the intersection of technology development and fine arts practice. Its focus is to support projects that integrate high-end technology as an integral component in the art-making process, as well as projects that include cross-disciplinary collaboration to inform their outcomes.
The goal of the @Lab is to develop and nourish a center of local, regional and international prominence both in its intellectual, as well as its artistic/aesthetic contributions.
The @Lab at Ohio University is committed to supporting projects in which technology is used to serve artistic merit.

IT Support
The role of the College of Fine Arts Instructional Technology Specialist is to provide assistance to units in maintaining, developing, and enhancing the use of technology for instructional purposes.
Requests for IT support should be submitted through the "Request IT Support" link below, so that requests can be prioritized according to urgency, need, and scope.
The following are examples of appropriate requests for support:
- Technical support to Faculty, Staff and Administrators for

The College IT specialist does not provide support for the following:
- Printing supplies (i.e. toner, ink, paper)
