Audition Information
Auditioning for the School of Dance:
Acceptance to the School of Dance major or minor program in choreography and performance is by talent audition. Auditions are scheduled to coordinate with various university application deadlines. Students who audition and are accepted into the dance program must also apply and be accepted by Ohio University.
The audition class includes modern, ballet, and jazz portions, and improvisation. Each of these provides the dancer with an opportunity to demonstrate his or her talent, level of training, and aptitude for further study in dance. Auditionees are not expected to demonstrate proficiency in all techniques. The audition committee evaluates technical proficiency, physical strength and flexibility, spatial and rhythmic accuracy, and performance quality. Dancers should be prepared to take class in dance wear that allows freedom of movement. You will need to dance barefoot for the modern portion of the audition class and may bring ballet slippers or jazz shoes to wear for the ballet and jazz portions of class.
Although attending a scheduled audition is the best possible means of representing your talent, if you are unable to attend, please call our office at (740) 593-1826 to discuss the possibility of other arrangements.
We host an Open House the Friday before each scheduled talent audition. Prospective students, parents, and friends are welcome to spend the day in our school, take class, meet dance majors, faculty, and staff, ask questions about the program, and see other parts of the campus at their leisure. Please contact us to let us know if you would like to attend the Open House.
The dance office will be open at noon on audition day for an Information Session. This session is open to parents and auditionees. It covers general information about the program as well as providing an overview of Financial Aid & Scholarship information.

Open House Day:
- Take a dance class with first year dance majors, 10:30 – 12:00, Putnam 134
- Arrange a campus tour campus with Admissions. Meet students, faculty and staff.
Audition Day:
- Attend Parents' Information Session, 12:00 noon, Putnam 239.
- Attend Audition class, 1:00 – 3:30, Putnam 134, and DANCE.
