Greetings from the School of Art + Design at Ohio University!
We are committed to developing professional artists, designers, and scholars who are dedicated to public discourse. The faculty here understand that practice and production are both emphasized and informed by aesthetic, intellectual, political, historical, cultural, and critical awareness. We see the visual arts at Ohio University as transformative for communities, society, and ourselves.
To accomplish this goal, we maintain a contemporary curriculum that emphasizes traditional practices, new media, and trans-disciplinary approaches to art. All of our degrees allow for interdisciplinary approaches to art. We also maintain a nationally respected visiting artist and scholar program.
The School of Art + Design also recognizes the importance of sending our students into the world. We sponsor vital off-campus study programs in London, Italy, Hungary, Ghana, and New York City. These programs help students gain critical practical experience and build life-changing professional networks.
Our students come from diverse geographic, ethnic, cultural, and aesthetic backgrounds. This diversity extends to the School of Art + Design curriculum, which includes graphic design, interior architecture, ceramics, painting + drawing, printmaking, photography + integrated media, sculpture + expanded practice, new media/trans-disciplinary art, and art history. Students are encouraged to become involved in various art forms, to experiment in interdisciplinary approaches, and to find the innate relationship within and across these expressive disciplines.
We maintain a strong commitment to our undergraduate programs. You will encounter full-time professors beginning year one. These dedicated and distinguished faculty teach 100% of our Foundations courses. Our facilities also are well equipped for every study area. Four exhibition spaces showcase the works of students, faculty, and visiting artists, providing arts experiences for the university and Athens communities. This brings a global perspective to our rich local culture.
We also have world-class graduate programs. In the most recent U.S. News national rankings of graduate programs, the School of Art + Design overall moved up five places to number 53, the Printmaking program moved up six places to number 14, and the Ceramics program moved up three places to number 5. The U.S. News graduate rankings are entirely peer-determined, which makes this an important indicator of our collective hard work.
