Hard of Hearing/Deafness

Eligibility Requirements

Persons who are Deaf or hard of hearing qualify for disabilty services by providing documentation from a licensed professional that includes a diagnosis of hearing loss, a copy of a recent audiogram, a description of functional limitations, and recommendations for accommodations, services and adaptive technology. In order to provide accommodations on a timely basis, students are strongly encouraged to register with Institutional Equity two months before the academic year begins.

Services

General Accommodations:  Arrangements for accommodations such as the use of sign language interpreters and close captioning services may take up to 4 weeks to arrange. Advance notice to Institutional Equity of the need for these acommodations is strongly suggested.

  • close captioning
  • use of amplified listening devices
  • Sign Language Interpreting services
  • liaison with faculty regarding academic adjustments 
  • referral and liaison with university departments in coordinating services
  • services available at Ohio University's Speech and Hearing Clinic, including diagnostic testing for communication disorders, hearing tests and hearing aid evaluations 
  • liaison with relevant external social service agencies

Registration: 

  • priority registration 
  • academic advising 

  Academic Accommodations: 

  • testing accommodations 
    • extended time for tests   
    • use of a word processor and spell check 
    • use of an Interpreter while test taking

Academic Support: 

  • peer tutoring (four hours per course per week) available at Academic Advancement Center 
  • assistance with computer skills available at Academic Advancement Center
  • course credit through the University College for classes listed below: 
    • Learning Strategies 
    • College Reading Skills 
    • University Experience (Fall Quarter) 

Auxiliary Aids: 

  • FM transceiver systems (first-come basis) 
  • Phonic Ear (first-come basis) 
  • note-taking referral 
  • visible warning devices and fire alarms in residential housing 
  • interpreting services (as needed) 

University Programs:

FM systems are available on loan on a first-come basis for persons attending lectures and performances at the Templeton Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium in the ticket office. Persons requesting a sign language interpreter for university programs or activities should contact the department sponsoring the program. It is preferable to received 5 days notice of the request for an interpreter. Every effort will be made to provide interpreting services in the event of less than five days notice.

  • The clinic offer an array of services, including intelligence and neuropsychological assessment, psychological testing, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder assessments, and learning disability assessment. Graduate student clinicians under the direct supervision of licensed psychologist faculty members provide these services.
