General Education lunch-and-learn

Join the conversation about the goals of an Ohio University education -- the common set of knowledge, skills and abilities that all OHIO students should achieve -- at a lunch-and-learn presentation

Thurs., Nov. 21 from 12-1 p.m. in the Academic & Research Center 102. Based on extensive review of general education models and program, a March 2012 task force report proposed a list of goals. A new general education implementation committee, formed by Provost Benoit early in 2013, is now working with deans to engage faculty within each college in a discussion on the list of goals and on faculty perceptions about how effective the current general education program is in helping students meet some or all of these goals.

Russ College faculty are well aware of how accreditation has required us to take an outcomes-based approach to our academic programs and courses.  University-level accreditation is now making it necessary to do the same for our general education program. You're invited to share input at the presentations, or, get in touch with the Russ College representative on the Gen Ed Committee, Greg Kremer, at kremer@ohio.edu

After collecting input from all colleges, the committee will make necessary updates based on faculty feedback, share the updated goals with the university community, and take the goals to faculty senate seeking approval.  The approved goals will be the foundation for an assessment of the current general education program, as well as a framework for colleges or programs to begin thinking about alternative ways that their students might meet these goals with other combinations of university and program level experiences.
