Engineering Ambassador Activities 2004-2005
Dr. Kathy Sullivan visit and Stocker Lecture
On October 19, 2004, the Engineering Ambassadors met with Dr. Kathy Sullivan, the first U.S. woman to perform a space walk and the president and CEO of COSI Columbus, one of the nation's premiere science centers.
Dr. Sullivan shared her accomplishments in a variety of different fields. She also discussed her love of science as a child and her experiences as an oceanographer and geographer. Discussing her opportunities at NASA, she described what it was like to be the first U.S. woman to walk in space and an inductee of the Astronaut Hall of Fame. She also talked about her future plans with NASA and her thoughts on the space program. In addition, Dr. Sullivan touched on her responsibilities as former chief scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and discussed her commitment to exposing the public to science and education through her position at COSI, a position she has held since 1996.
Dr. Sullivan then answered questions concerning her experiences in space, her perceptions of restrictions on women working in scientific fields, and her adventures and future endeavors at COSI. The discussion ended with the Engineering Ambassadors congratulating Dr. Sullivan on her recent fourth Presidential nomination to be appointed a member of the National Science Board, and thanking Dr. Sullivan for sharing her experiences with them.
