Why do you want an overseas experience? What type of program sounds interesting to you?
Why do you want an overseas experience?
I would like to earn credit towards my degree.- A study abroad or exchange program with academic credit included is appropriate for you. You could take courses for your major or minor, take general tier II and tier III requirements, or take electives.
I would like to get practical training that will help me in my career.- An internship abroad, volunteer abroad, or work abroad experience may be appropriate for you. However, any type of international experience looks great on a resume, and some study abroad programs offer practical experience as well as courses.
I would like to help others while abroad. I want to study a language abroad. I would like to work while abroad.- A work abroad experience may be appropriate for you. Remember that there are many places where it is difficult or not possible to work, so you will be restricted by location.
I would like to experience life in another culture.- Whether you do a study abroad or other type of program, you want to check that the program has a home-stay option, that you can live with students from the host culture, or that there are ample opportunities for interaction with people from the host culture.
I just want to see the world!- You may want to arrange an independent travel or backpacking trip. Don’t forget, though, that any study abroad program will allow you to see the world (and will probably allow time for independent travel).
What type of program sounds interesting to you?
A program in which I will earn academic credit.- You have a lot of options! You will want to participate in an Ohio University study abroad program, an Ohio University exchange program, a program through the Ohio International Consortium, an affiliate program, or another third-party provider program. Volunteer experience- You can find placements worldwide in projects in a variety of fields, such as agriculture, children’s issues, environment, health, peace and conflict resolution, and more. Duration of placement can range anywhere from one week to two years. This is good if you are interested in a service-oriented, non-credit overseas experience.
