Myths about education abroad
I can’t afford to study abroad OU keeps their programs as affordable as possible. Talk to a study abroad advisor about finding affordable programs. If you go on an OU program, another Ohio institution’s program, or an OU affiliate program, all of your financial aid (loans, grants, and scholarships) applies. There are also specific grants and scholarships you can apply for to study abroad.
I don’t speak a foreign language You don’t have to speak another language to study abroad. There are programs in English available all over the world. However, going abroad is a great way to learn a foreign language.
I can’t graduate in time if I go abroad You can take classes to fulfill Tier II, Tier III, general education, or major requirements while you’re abroad. Talk to your academic advisor to find out when would be the best time for you to go overseas and which classes to take while you’re there.
Study abroad won’t benefit my career In today’s global society, being able to operate in a culture other than your own is valuable in any field. It shows that you are independent and able to communicate with all types of people. Studying abroad looks impressive on any resume!
It’s too late to study abroad Many students go abroad their senior year. Some even take the summer after they graduate to do a program. It’s never too late!
