J. Michael Lawrie Global Education Scholarship
This award is for students enrolled full-time in the College of Arts and Sciences only.

2012-13 Application form

Application deadlines
2012 winter break/spring semester programs: November 22, 2012 (The deadline has been extended)
2013 summer/fall programs: February 15, 2013

J. Michael Lawrie is a generous alumnus of Ohio University who donated money to the Office of Education Abroad during the Bicentennial Campaign in 2004 to establish the J.Michael Lawrie Global Education Scholarship Fund for outstanding student leaders at Ohio University. Mr. Lawrie, who received his bachelor’s degree in history from Ohio University in 1975, had a distinguished career at IBM as its senior vice president, leading the company’s global operations in 124 countries. In 2004, he became the CEO of Siebel Systems, and now works as a business consultant. Mr. Lawrie is a national trustee of Ohio University who attributes a great deal of his international business success to his initial student leadership experiences during his undergraduate years at Ohio University.

Awards are generally for a minimum of $750.

Eligibility
Ohio University undergraduate students attending the Athens campus who are enrolled full-time in the College of Arts & Sciences and who will have junior or senior status at the time of study abroad are eligible. Students must have a minimum 3.4 cumulative GPA. This scholarship is for students involved in leadership activities on campus who possess a high degree of personal integrity. Applicants must be planning to participate in an Ohio University study abroad or exchange program. Students must know the program they are applying to, even if the application has not yet been turned in. Students may contact the Office of Education Abroad for more information regarding the approval process.

Selection criteria

The following factors will be considered in selecting a recipient:

  1. Demonstrated leadership on campus and personal integrity
  2. Merit/GPA
  3. Essay
  4. References
  5. Personal suitability (maturity, cultural sensitivity, responsibility)  

In addition to completing the attached application form, please submit the following by the application deadline:

  • An essay describing your leadership experience at Ohio University and reasons for applying for scholarship. Please write how this study abroad experience will benefit you personally, professionally, and as a leader. This essay should be double-spaced and one to two pages long.
  • Two recommendation letters. One should be personal and one should be professional/academic.
