Initial considerations
In what region, country or city would you like to study/work/volunteer? How long would your ideal program be?
How will you pay for your overseas experience? What is your foreign language ability?
In what region, country or city would you like to study/work/volunteer?
- I have a few destinations in mind.
- I am not really sure.
How long would your ideal program be?
- Whether you would like to study for a summer, quarter, semester, academic year, or during winter intersession, you can browse programs by term.
How will you pay for your overseas experience?
- I am hoping to use my financial aid and scholarships.
- Your scholarships and financial aid will apply for all Ohio University programs, for OIC programs, and for third-party providers affiliated with OU. More information is available at funding for education abroad.
- I would like to research funding opportunities.
- I am hoping to save additional money.
- Funding opportunities lists resources for hints on earning and saving money.
- Money-saving tips:
- Start putting $15 a week aside to save up for your plane ticket or other program costs.
- Look into private loans through your bank or other financial institution.
- Look at countries where the dollar is competitive.
- I am not concerned about finances.
What is your foreign language ability?
- I do not have much foreign language experience, but I would like to study language at the beginner level.
- While searching for programs, look for programs that have few to minimal prerequisite requirements. There are a few Ohio University language programs that offer beginning level language (Leipzig, Germany, Quebec City, Canada, Salzburg, Austria, Odense, Denmark). Programs offered through the OIC, OU affiliates, and third-party providers offer various levels of language study.
- I do not have a foreign language, but I need one to graduate.
- Depending on the length of your requirement, you may need to take some courses on-campus before going abroad or after you return. Many Ohio University language programs and others have prerequisites or may not fulfill a two-year language requirement (it is typical to get 12-16 language hours out of a quarter-long program; a semester-long program can provide up to 24 credit hours).
- Ohio University language programs lists our language programs. Programs offered through the OIC, OU affiliates, and third-party providers offer various levels of language study.
- I have been studying a language and want to take my skills out of the classroom.
- I do not have a foreign language or do not want to study only foreign language.
- You may want to study in an English-speaking country or you can study in a non-English-speaking country where English is used as the language of instruction.
