This student exchange program offers European studies at the University of Southern Denmark's Scandinavian Area Studies Program. The University of Southern Denmark, located in the city of Odense, was founded in 1966 and has approximately 15,000 students. It is a modern campus with nearby residence halls and student facilities for sports and recreational activities. Odense, the regional capital of Funen, is just a few hours' train ride from Copenhagen and is noted as the birthplace of the great writer of children's literature, Hans Christian Andersen. The 1,000-year old city has a 185,000 inhabitants making it the third largest city in Denmark.

Selection process
The program is open to undergraduate and graduate students of all majors who have a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students are selected based on their academic achievements, personal essay, and interview. Applications are available online.

Courses and credits
The Scandinavian Area Studies Program (SAS) is an intensive one-semester (15 weeks) introduction to Scandinavian cultural, social political, economic, and historical life. Students take a total of 250 credit hours, equivalent to approximately 22 quarter credits. All courses, except the language course, are taught in English.

All students must enroll in Beginning Danish (170 class hours) and Danish/Scandinavian Culture (50 class hours) and choose one additional course from the following offerings:

  • Scandinavian Society and Politics (30 class hrs.)
  • Danish/Scandinavian Modern History (30 class hrs.)
  • The Scandinavian Model: Economic and Social Aspects (30 class hrs.)
  • Inter-cultural Marketing: Marketing in Scandinavia (30 class hrs.)

Students opting to stay for the academic year must enroll in Advanced Danish Language for the second semester but are allowed to choose other courses offered in the Faculty of Social Sciences and/or the Faculty of Humanities.

Living arrangements
The University of Southern Denmark guarantees accommodation for all exchange students, either in a hall of residence or in approved private lodgings of similar standard.
