Avignon, France

The Ohio University Department of Modern Languages offers intensive study of French language, literature, culture, and civilization during spring quarter in France. Avignon is less than three hours by train from Paris and 40 miles from the Mediterranean Sea. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the city has impressive museums and monuments and many great festivals. Excursions to such regional highlights as Provencal villages and the city of Marseille and activities including visits to the theatre or to cooking classes will form an integral part of the program.

Program length

Spring Quarter (late March-early June)

Eligibility and selection process
The program is NOT limited to students majoring or minoring in French, as students from numerous academic areas have participated. All participants are required to have completed second-year French (213) by the end of winter quarter and be in good academic standing.

Admission is selective and is based upon grades in French, letters of recommendation, level in French at OU, class rank, GPA, and a statement of interest (in English). Other factors may also be taken into consideration.

Application deadline
October - Early application is encouraged. Specific deadlines can be found online. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Living arrangements
Housing and two meals per day (breakfast and dinner) are provided by French host families.

Courses and credits
Students in the program will enroll in:

  • FR 343: Conversations and Composition
  • FR 348: French Civilization from the Origins to the Revolution
  • Two 400-level courses (TBA)

All participants must register for and attend ML 250B (a 1-4 credit hour orientation class) in the winter quarter. This course will prepare students for their experience abroad and will include graded assignments relative to such preparation.
