The Department of Modern Languages offers the opportunity for students to study German language, literature, and culture in Salzburg, Austria. The program is open to students from all majors and colleges. Aside from studying, students in the program will take field trips to significant and interesting sites throughout the city and province of Salzburg. Students also have the option to travel independently on the weekends.

Spring quarter (March-June)

Eligibility and selection process
The program is open to undergraduates who have successfully completed at least German 112 by the end of Winter Quarter and are in good academic standing. Selection is based grades, an interview with the program director, recommendations, and the mix of student proficiency levels.

Advanced students will be considered on a space available basis. Students who have at least completed one 300-level German course should contact the Salzburg director (Dr. Sathe) about appropriate study abroad opportunities.

Application deadline
Mid-November
However, early application is strongly encouraged, since space is limited. There is a non-refundable deposit of $100 to apply for the program which will go towards program costs.

Living arrangements
Students live together in a modern Austrian dormitory in doubles or triples with a private toilet and shower. The building is located on a bus route to the town-center, train station, shopping centers and restaurants.

Courses and credits
  • Students who have completed GER 112 will take GER 113, 211, 212, and 213.
  • Students who have completed GER 212 will take GER 213, 341, 342, and 349.
  • Special programs of study may be arranged for advanced students.
  • Students accepted must also register for ML 250A during winter quarter.
Travel documents
    US Citizens:
  • Passports: All US citizens must have a valid passport for international travel. Visit Passport and visa information for application details.
  • Visas: US citizens will not need a visa for stays up to (90) days. If you are planning on studying or traveling outside of the program dates, please visit the Austrian Embassy for information on visa requirements and applications. You will need a passport when applying for a visa, please apply for your passport when you apply to the program.
    Non-US Citizens:
  • We recommend you speak with an advisor in International Faculty and Student Services before you commit to any program.
  • If you plan to return to the US after your program, you must contact International Faculty and Student Services to verify that you will be eligible to re-enter the country. All international students holding a non-immigrant visa must visit International Faculty and Student Services to receive necessary signatures 4 to 6 weeks before your departure.
  • Host country visas: You may need a visa or other travel document for travel to this country, visit Austrian Embassy for more information. If you will travel through another country to reach this destination, you may need a transit visa for this stop-over. You can find more information from the embassy of the country you are traveling through; embassy websites are listed at http://www.embassiesabroad.com/.

  • Incidentals: $800
Program fee includes room, board, and excursions. Incidentals include books and supplies, personal expenses, passport, and health insurance. Financial aid may be applied to program costs; further information available from the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships.
