Teach in Ghana

Teach in Ghana student with class, 2005Teach in Ghana participants have a unique opportunity to gain real teaching experience while exploring the rich culture of this West African nation. Students are placed in primary, junior or senior high schools and develop cross-cultural teaching skills that are becoming increasingly important in today’s U.S. schools and classrooms. Through full immersion in the placement schools, at home and on weekend excursions, participants will learn from and about Ghanaian people, culture and traditions.

Eligibility and selection process
This program is open to Education majors and to students who have experience teaching or working with young people. Successful participants must be energetic, open-minded and in good physical and emotional health. Applicants are expected to have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.75.

Living arrangements
Each student will be placed with a Ghanaian family in either a rural or urban setting, and will be treated as a member of the family. The student will have his/her own bedroom and the family will provide breakfast and dinner.
 
Courses and credits
Students must register for a full quarter of undergraduate or graduate coursework. Course options include:

  • EDCS 205: Learning from Non-Western Cultures
  • EDCS 301 & 301L: Education and Cultural Diversity
  • EDCS 400: School, Society, & the Professional Educator
  • EDCS 490: Independent Study in Culture Studies
  • EDIC 425A: Education and Development in Africa
  • EDPL 360: Field Experience
  • EDPL 310 & 310L: Advanced Methods for the Democratic Classroom

Graduate students should contact the program coordinator for available graduate courses.

Cost*
Billed by Ohio University

  • Tuition: one quarter of full-time OU tuition
  • Administrative Fee: $150
  • Program Fee: $3400 - $3800 (includes round-trip airfare, housing, most meals, orientations, and excursions)

Out-of-pocket expenses

  • Passport and photos: $110  
  • Visa: $80
  • Immunizations and anti-malarial medication: $300
  • Textbooks and supplies: $100
  • Incidentals (includes local travel, some lunches, and personal expenses): $500-$800

Financial aid may be applied to program costs; further information available from the Office of Student Financial Aid and Scholarships.
