| What better way to focus on the relationship between cultural spaces, creative writing, literature and history than a 3 week immersion experience in Valencia, Spain?
The city of Valencia and its museum spaces will serve as catalysts for creative writing in Spanish. Through a series of guided discussions, object based learning/visual literacy activities and writing activities during site visits, students will embark on either a short story project or a poetry project. Writings produced as a result of each site visit will form the building blocks for the construction of the final project.
Site visits will include the historic center of Valencia, Museo de la Ciudad, Ciudad de las Artes y Ciencias, Jardines del Turia, Mercado Central, La Lonja de la Seda (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Museo de Historia de Valencia, Museo de Bellas Artes San Pío V, Peñsícola (day trip), Casa Museo Blasco Ibáñez, and more! Interaction with local scholars and museum staff will deepen students’ understanding of place and culture. Students will be expected to keep a journal during the study abroad experience, and will be housed with host families to further enhance cultural immersion.
Upon return, individual student meetings to discuss final drafts will be held before submission of the final project at the end of Summer Session II. Writings will be printed as an in-house publication by the Department of Modern Languages, and a public reading will be held at the beginning of Fall Semester at the Kennedy Museum of Art.
