Participate in an academic exchange in the bustling metropolis of Leipzig! Ohio University's program with the University of Leipzig offers a unique opportunity to experience fully the changes in Germany as the former East is unified with the West. Abundant in culture and history, Leipzig is a bustling metropolis of 550,000 people, aggressively reclaiming its traditional stature as a trade center between East and West. Founded in 1409, Leipzig Universitat is situated in contemporary buildings scattered throughout the center of the city.

Eligibility and selection process
The Leipzig exchange program is open to undergraduate and graduate students of all majors who have three years of college-level German or sufficient language proficiency with an overall GPA of 3.0. Students who have a judicial record and will be on probation for a judicial offense at any point during the program may petition to study abroad. Click here to read the entire judicial policy.

This program does not accept Non Ohio University students.

Courses and credits Exchange participants will enroll full-time in courses alongside German students. A full curriculum of courses conducted in German language is available to students. One semester of coursework in Germany is equivalent to approximately 1.5 quarters of credit. Living arrangements Students may select from several university sponsored options: dormitories with single rooms, dorms with German roommates or student houses. Students cook their own food and/or eat in inexpensive university cafeterias and restaurants.

Requesting accommodation for disabilities

Students participating in an Ohio University exchange program should communicate with their program coordinator in the Office of Education Abroad on how to request accommodation from the partner institution.

Entry and exit requirements

U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport when traveling outside of the United States.  If you plan to study or travel abroad in the next year, apply for your passport now.

Students on the Leipzig Exchange program who are US citizens are required to apply for a residence permit in order to reside in Germany for over 90 days. Normally, students enter Germany on a tourist visa and apply for their residence permit while in Germany with the support of the University of Leipzig. Students will need to show sufficient funds to support themselves while in-country as part of this process.
