TROPICAL DISEASE INSTITUTE, ECUADOR
Two programs available for summer 2010
The Tropical Disease Institute was founded in 1987 by a group of visionary scientists who wanted to combine their expertise and resources to improve the life of people living in disease endemic areas.
TDI initiated its education abroad programs in 1995, with the Medical Entomology workshop. Since then, over 200 students from more than 30 universities in the USA, Europe and New Zealand have participated in the annual programs offered by the Institute. The experience accumulated by our faculty and staff allows us to provide participants with a safe and meaningful experience.
Ecuador has been the focus of TDI's international activities. Close collaboration with government and non-governmental organizations, and the prestigious Catholic University of Ecuador, has allowed for the creation of tangible research infrastructure and the implementation of ambitious and successful research, service and education programs.
Faculty and students have been instrumental in the initiation of Chagas disease control, and T. cruzi blood screeningprograms in Ecuador. The blood bank initiative has lead to a major improvement in the safety of the country's blood supply. These endeavors have had a major impact on the lives of the Ecuadorian people.
TDI programs are multidisciplinary and are open to undergraduate, graduate and medical students from any University. Opportunities for internships are also available within TDI sponsored research projects.
Two TDI programs are available through Ohio University in summer 2010.
