Cuenca, Ecuador

Latin American Culture and Spanish Language


The Cuenca Ecuador Study Abroad program is a 10-week language and cultural immersion program sponsored by Latin American Studies and directed by Anne Porter (Modern Languages). Cuenca is an ideal setting; it is a beautiful, medium-sized city located at 8,200 feet in Ecuador’s southern Andes Mountains. Cuenca has preserved its colonial heritage of narrow, cobblestone streets and colonial architecture and has grown into a modern Ecuadorian city.

Spring Quarter (Late March – Early June)

Eligibility and Selection Process
All students who have completed SPAN 212 and who are in good academic standing may apply. Priority is given to students majoring in Latin American Studies and advanced Spanish-speakers. Admission will be based on academic accomplishments, statement of purpose, interviews, letter of recommendation, and academic standing.

Living Arrangements
Each student will live with a family in houses that are safe, comfortable, and relatively close to the center of town.

Courses and Credits
Intermediate students will complete SPAN 213 and two 300-level electives. Advanced students will enroll in three of the following: SPAN 341, 343, 355/356, 349, 435, and 439. All participants will enroll in a four-credit Modern Languages courses consisting of mandatory orientation during the winter quarter at OU and lectures and field trips in Ecuador.

If you have completed most of the Spanish major requirements, contact the program director for other options.

This program satisfies the Latin American Studies major requirement for study abroad in Latin America.

Program fee includes round trip, airfare, and travel within Ecuador,housing and most food.
