| THIS PROGRAM IS ONLY BEING OFFERED IN ODD YEARS Students in Child and Family Studies with a concentration in child life will get the opportunity to spend four weeks in Cape Town, South Africa as a volunteer and/or doing intense volunteer experience work at Red Cross Children’s Hospital. Students will work with the Child Life staff and the Pain Management Team in a variety of inpatient wards throughout the hospital. In addition, students will get the chance to participate in four to five children’s health service-learning projects. The group will work with Connect-123, an organization that develops and manages volunteer, internship and study abroad programs in a variety of cities, including Cape Town. Connect-123 will |
| integrate service-learning experiences into the students’ educational program; these experiences include assisting at a medical clinic in one of the area townships, providing activities for HIV+ teenagers and spending the day at an assisted living medical facility for children.
In addition, Connect-123 plans various optional excursions in and around Cape Town, including a safari (included in program price), site seeing trips along the coast and adventure excursions. All costs involved are shared upfront and students can voluntarily participate. Please note these costs are not a required part of the program and therefore are not listed in the student budget worksheet. In Child and Family Studies, students following the child life concentration gain hands-on, structured experience in children’s hospitals that are critical in securing competitive internship placements required for their national certification exam. Getting this hands-on experience in an international setting would only enhance a student’s overall academic experience.
