The program provides students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in a Spanish-speaking environment, explore and do research on Puerto Rican culture, and interact with noted scholars. Students will strengthen their language skills through immersion. Students will be paired with a volunteer from the Instituto Interdisciplinario y Multicultural (INIM) who will accompany them to museums, markets, public spaces, and cultural performances. INIM was created in 2005 to promote international academic exchange in Puerto Rican culture and offer Spanish language immersion.
Program Length Winter Intersession (late November-mid December)
Eligibility and Selection Process This program is open to students from all academic departments and levels. Previous knowledge of Spanish is not necessary so everyone from beginners to advanced speakers is encouraged to apply.

Program is canceled for the 2007-08 academic year. Interested students can apply for the 2008-09 program.
Living Arrangements Students will be housed on the fourth floor of the Casa de huéspedes, an on-campus dormitory. Each room houses two students and is fully equipped (a refrigerator is included). All rooms are also ready for wireless technology. For meals, each student will have two coupons per day (breakfast and lunch), which they can redeem in any of the cafeterias on campus. Dinners are not included and are the responsibility of each individual.
Courses and Credits Students in the program will enroll in either:
- ILML 336 (Undergraduate)
- SPAN 698 (Graduate)
- SPAN 447 (Arranged as Independent Study)
Cost*
Billed by Ohio University:
- Tuition: 4 credits of undergraduate OU tuition or 5 credits of graduate OU tuition (in addition to winter quarter tuition)
- Program Fee: $2750
- Administrative Fee: $150
Program fee includes housing, board (two meals five days a week), airfare, and field trips.
Out-of-Pocket Expenses:
- Passport and Photos: $110
- International Student ID Card (ISIC): $22 (required)
- Incidentals (includes textbooks and supplies): $650
