The University of Newcastle, with a campus enrollment of 22,000, offers students the perfect combination of lifestyle and learning. Set in superb bushland and close to spectacular surf beaches, waterways and forests, the University is internationally renowned and among the top ten research universities in Australia. Students study at the Callaghan main campus located in Newcastle, a lively port city on a breathtaking stretch of Australian coastline, conveniently located 2 hours away from Sydney.

Eligibility and selection process
This program is open to undergraduate students of all majors. All applicants must have a 3.0 GPA. Visit Education Abroad application to apply.
Applications will be reviewed when all requested materials are submitted and after the application deadline. Applicants will be notified of their status by e-mail and may be interviewed by the program selection committee. Preference given to sophomores and above, although freshmen may apply. Applicants must demonstrate a high level of maturity and responsibility, which is required due to the independent nature of this exchange. Iterviews will be conducted.

Courses and credit
The University of Newcastle’s academic programs include: Architecture, Art, Australian Studies, Business, Classics, Computer Sciences, Cultural Studies, Economics, Education, Engineering, Environmental Studies, Fine Arts, Health, History, Humanities, Law, Music, Nursing, and Science.
Newcastle courses are listed as units. Most courses are typically worth 10 units each. OU students must enroll for a minimum of 30 units (18 OU quarter hours) and a maximum of 40 units (24 OU quarter hours). To search for courses click here. Be sure you are searching for the semester corresponding to your stay. Students on the exchange take courses at the Callaghan campus. Students do not enroll in courses until they arrive on campus, so you should have alternative courses selected in case you are unable to get into some of the courses you selected.
Living arrangements
Participants have the option of living on or off-campus or with a family. The University of Newcastle offers a comprehensive accommodation service to assist students in locating secure, affordable, and comfortable housing.
Travel documents
US Citizens:
- Passports: All US citizens must have a valid passport for international travel. Visit Passport and visa information for application details.
- Visas: All US citizens will need a student visa for the duration of their program. You will need a passport when applying for a visa, please apply for your passport when you apply to the program. General information is available at the Australian Embassy; your program coordinator will provide details on applying for a visa.
Non-US Citizens:
- We recommend you speak with an advisor in International Faculty and Student Services before you commit to any program.
- If you plan to return to the US after your program, you must contact International Faculty and Student Services to verify that you will be eligible to re-enter the country. All international students holding a non-immigrant visa MUST visit International Faculty and Student Services to receive necessary signatures 4 to 6 weeks before your departure.
- Host country visas: You may need a visa or other travel document for travel to this country, visit the Australian Embassy for more information. If you will travel through another country to reach this destination, you may need a transit visa for this stop-over.
