Musashi University Exchange Program

This is an opportunity to enroll directly for a semester or an academic year at Musashi University

Students will have the opportunity to enroll for a semester or year in the East Asian Studies Program at Musashi University in Tokyo, Japan. While in the program, student will primarily enroll in East Asian Studies courses taught in English, and begin or continue their study of Japanese.

University students will study alongside approximately 20 other program participants from Musashi’s partner institutions worldwide. Small class sizes, strong student support services and a community-oriented university atmosphere makes Musashi a place where students can connect with EAS instructors and staff, Japanese students and local culture.

 Program Length

 * Fall Semester: mid-September –January

Academic Year: April – January

 * Spring semester may also be available by special arrangement.

 Application Deadline – March 25, 2009

 Eligibility and Selection Process

The program is open to all students who are in good academic standing. No prior Japanese study is required.  This program is designed specifically for students wishing to complete an East Asian Studies major, minor, or certificate with no prior background in the language or the culture.  However, students who have experienced the Chubu Program or who wish also to spend more time than outlined above studying Japanese can also be accommodated.  Please discuss these interests with the contact persons listed below before applying.  Applications are available at http://www.ohio.edu/educationabroad/students/App.cfm  Students will also need to complete an interview with the program director.

 Living Arrangements

 Students will share a room with an international or Japanese student in university-owned residence halls. The dorms are located off-campus, approximately an hour train ride away from the university. Breakfast and dinner will be provided at the dining halls Monday through Saturday (12 meals per week).

 Courses and Credits

Students will enroll in both East Asian Studies courses, taught in English, and a Japanese language course taught at the appropriate level.

 East Asian Studies courses:  

         Fall Term (choose three courses)

·         East Asian Business

·         International Political Economy

·         Japanese Politics

·         Japanese History Since 1850

            Spring Term (choose three courses)

·         Identities in Contemporary Japan

·         East Asian Economies

·         Japanese Foreign Policy

·         Religion in East Asia

Japanese Language courses: Students will enroll in a Japanese language class at the appropriate level. There is no Japanese language pre-requisite, and students of all abilities, beginner through advanced, can be accommodated. A placement exam will be given on-site to assess language proficiency.

 Cost Estimate for 2009-2010*

 Billed by Ohio University:

            Tuition (year): 3 quarters of OU tuition + tech fees

            Tuition (semester): 1.5 quarters of OU tuition + tech fees

            HTH health insurance: $25/ month

            Administration Fee: $150

 Estimated Out-of-Pocket Expenses: semester/year

 

            International Airfare: $1400/$1600

            Passport and photos: $110

            Visa: $80

            Room & Board: $525/month

            Meals not provided by dorm: $400/month

            Train/Metro passes: $80/month

            Incidentals: $1000/$2500

 

Total cost for academic year exchange: $15,770 + OU tuition and fees (Based on 11 months)

Total cost for semester exchange: $7890 + OU tuition and fees (Based on 5 months)

 Student Life:  Musashi University is a small private university in Tokyo that enrolls approximately 4,000 students. The university has over 90 recognized student clubs and organizations that OU students can get involved in. While on campus, students also have the support of the International Studies Center, which is dedicated to serving Musashi’s international students. The EAS program also plans social events and monthly excursions specifically for its students.
