Media Studies in Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The Malaysia study abroad program is an affordable way for students to explore the medium of film in the rich cultural, historical and religious context of Malaysia. This six-week summer program offers courses in scriptwriting and documentary studies with a Southeast-Asian emphasis. The program is sponsored by the Center for International Studies in cooperation with the School of Media Arts & Studies and directed by Professor Frederick Lewis.

The program will be based at the University of Malaya in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the cultural and economic center of the country. Students will have ample opportunity to immerse themselves in the history and culture of the region, and incorporate the unique learning environment of the program into their coursework.

Program Length: Six weeks; June 29th – August 7, 2009

Eligibility and Selection Process: The program is open to any student in good academic and judiciary standing regardless of major. Students need to complete the Education Abroad application available at: http://www.ohio.edu/educationabroad/students/App.cfm

Living Arrangements:

Program participants will share a university-owned house on the University of Malaya campus in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Students will have the option of preparing their own meals, or purchasing inexpensive meals at one of several on-campus canteens.

Courses and Credits:
Students will take courses in scriptwriting and documentary studies. The content of both courses will be modified to ensure that students are heavily immersed in local/regional culture. Participants will enroll in the following courses for a total of eight credits:

*MDIA 231 – Intro to Short Form Scriptwriting – 4 credits
Description: Students will research and write a narrative script adapted from SE Asian literature or an original script based upon historical or current events in the region. They will also write a non-fiction script focused on local subject matter.

*MDIA 486 – Contemporary Documentary – 4 credits
Description: The course will focus entirely on documentaries from SE Asia. Local   documentary filmmakers will be invited to screen and discuss their work with students. 

* Because of the unique focus and content of these courses, students who have already completed MDIA 231 or MDIA 486 will be eligible to enroll in the courses for independent study credit.
