Chinese Language & Culture in Beijing, China

Details below relate to summer 2009.  Please check back for updated information on the summer 2010 program.

Guarding the Emperor, Maria Waltner, Beijing, ChinaThe Summer Chinese Language and Culture Program provides OU students an opportunity to study Chinese language and culture in China, where they can be totally emerged into the language environment while learning the culture first-hand. Students will be exposed to the real China, its history, culture, philosophy, politics, religion and customs. They can interact with the local Chinese. In summary, the program provides students with everything that the Chinese language program can offer at OU, and much more, to help them broaden their views about a different part of this world, an important aspect of academic training in the current climate of globalization.

This program completes the foreign language requirement for the College of Arts and Sciences.

Dates of program: June 24 - August 7, 2009.

Eligibility and selection process: Students must have completed the 111-113 Chinese language series, have a minimum 3.0 GPA (students with less than a 3.0 GPA will be considered if they have excelled in Chinese language courses)

Living arrangements: OU students will stay in multi-story dorms, together with other international students from all over the world in the ‘academic district’ of Beijing, adjacent to many other well-established universities. There are several student cafeterias on campus and numerous small, inexpensive restaurants around campus for students to dine in.

Excursions: Students will visit the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, the Peking Man Museum, the Temple of Heaven, and two more local historic and contemporary cultural places of interest.

Courses and credits:

  • Chinese 211 Intermediate Chinese 1 (4 credit hours)
  • Chinese 212 Intermediate Chinese 2 (4 credit hours)
  • Chinese 213 Intermediate Chinese 3 (4 credit hours)
***Note: Students will be required to enroll in Chin 399a, Field Studies in China, spring quarter, a 2 credit orientation course to prepare them for studying in a different culture and for background knowledge about China.

Cost: Billed by Ohio University
  • Tuition: 12 OU credits
  • Program fee: 2700*
  • Administrative fee: $150
    *Program fee includes roundtrip airfare, accommodation & some meals, excursions, cellphone, and health insurance.
Out-of-pocket expenses:
  • Passport and Photos: $115
  • Meals: $210
  • Vaccinations (if not current): $100
