Passport and visa information
U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport when traveling outside of the United States. Due to new travel requirements it may take up to 3 months to receive a new passport. If you plan to study or travel abroad in the next year, apply for your passport now – it will be valid for 10 years!
US State Department has passport application instructions on-line. If you have a passport and were over the age of 16 when it was issued, it will be valid for ten years from date of issuance. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the end of your program.
Will I need a visa? Some countries also require a visa to legally enter and reside in the country. You will need a valid passport when applying for your visa. General visa requirement information is available from the embassy of the country you are visiting or through the US State Department; ask your program coordinator for specific details on the visa you will need.
How much time does it take to receive a passport? It currently takes approximately 10-12 weeks from the time you turn in application to receive your passport.
There is an expedited service where you can ask to have your passport application processed in approximately 2-4 weeks. It is an additional $60 fee plus overnight delivery costs to expedite your application.
What do you need to apply for a passport?
- Proof of Identity (i.e.: previous passport or valid U.S. driver’s license)
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship (i.e.: previous passport or certified copy of birth certificate)
- Your Social Security Number
- 2 Passport Photos (2”x2”)
- Completed Passport Application, signed in the presence of an official at the place of application.

If your passport is lost or stolen while you are overseas, you will need to contact the nearest U.S. Consulate or Embassy and local police authorities.
