Department of Modern Languages Study Abroad Scholarship

DML Study Abroad Scholarship

DML Study Abroad Scholarship Application

Application deadline: due at same time as program application
Electronic Application submission: education.abroad@ohio.edu
Notification of awards: with nomination to program

Scholarships
Scholarships may be up to $1,000 for winter intersession programs, up to $1500 for one quarter or summer of study, and a maximum of $3000 for students going abroad for more than one quarter, on DML-sponsored faculty-led study abroad programs. Award amounts are determined by individual programs. The award depends on merit, the total cost of the program, and the degree of financial need of the student. The award will be directly applied to program costs. Students who are applying for a study abroad program sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages anytime during the current academic year (including summer) must apply by the chosen program’s deadline.

A committee consisting of the program director and one other faculty member will determine the number and amount of awards within each program. This is a competitive award and not every applicant will be successful.

Eligibility

  • Ohio University undergraduate or graduate students in good academic standing
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2
  • Students must be applying for a faculty-led study abroad program sponsored by the DML.
  • Students must have submitted their on-line study abroad program application at the time of scholarship submission.

Enrollment requirements

  • Students are required to be enrolled in at least the minimum credit hours required by the program.

The following factors will be considered in selecting a recipient:

  • Demonstrated interest in chosen country (e.g. coursework, extracurricular activities, outreach)
  • Merit (GPA, references provided in support of your program application, CV or résumé)
  • The copy of your DARS report or a transcript from Ohio University submitted in support of your program application. [Note: graduate students who have completed only one quarter of study at Ohio University will be asked to submit an undergraduate transcript]
  • Personal suitability (e.g. maturity, cultural sensitivity, responsibility)
  • Financial need: In order for the committee to consider financial need, applicants must either be receiving need-based financial aid or be able to demonstrate an Adjusted Gross Income of $125,000 or less. Applicants without a current FAFSA on file must submit a copy of the most recent W-4 form on which you were claimed (please black out social security numbers).

Complete applications include:

  • A completed application form
  • An essay explaining your interest in the chosen country and its language, the education abroad program you have selected, and why you have chosen that program. If you have previously studied, worked or lived abroad, please provide a brief description of the experience or program(s). This essay should be double-spaced and two-to-three pages long.
  • CV or résumé required

Submission guidelines:

  • All applications must be submitted electronically. Paper applications will not be accepted.
