Quarters to Semesters (Q2S) Advising Tips

Q to S Advising Tips for prospective Study Abroad Students

Don't forget to discuss study abroad with your academic advisor when you fill out your transition degree advising plan.

Are you wondering how studying abroad will be impacted by the transition to semesters in the fall of 2012? Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions.

How will Education Abroad opportunities be impacted by the switch to semesters?

  • Ohio University education abroad programs will continue to be offered after the transition to semesters. Please consult individual program web pages for information about when a specific program will run.
  • If you are currently considering a semester-long program, semester programs are offered through our exchange partners, affiliates and non-OHIO providers.
  • The new semester calendar aligns more favorably with academic calendars at international institutions. Therefore, students will have more options to choose from when considering affiliate, partner and non-OU programs.

If I am thinking about studying abroad, what can I do to prepare for the transition?

  • Do not begin a sequence of courses that cannot be completed before the transition or before your study abroad experience (whichever comes first).
  • Work with your academic advisor to identify the best term for you to go abroad, and plan your coursework accordingly. You may want to reserve courses that are easy to complete abroad.

How can I be sure that I can get the classes I need and won’t fall behind?

  • Studying abroad during the summer can be a great way to make up credits or get ahead academically. Language and Tier courses are very common abroad, and can be an interesting way to fulfill university requirements. A summer abroad can also help you complete a course sequence before the Q2S transition occurs.
  • Students work closely with their academic advisor and the transfer credit specialist from their college to ensure that credits earned abroad will fulfill the necessary requirements.
