Malaysia

Students will experience the rich mosaic of life in Malaysia through its diversity of peoples, religions, cultures and practices. Through many encounters and experiences, students will learn to be aware of and appreciate diversity and plurality that exist in a modern, stable, and peaceful nation. Students will be able to enjoy taking classes and or workshops with a variety of Malaysian lecturers that will enhance their international learning experience. Weekend excursions to historical Melaka and the vibrant city-state of Singapore will strengthen students’ historical and cosmopolitan world-view.

In-class lectures, discussions and presentations will be conducted in the mornings from 9:00am to 1:00pm; afternoons will be devoted to short excursions in and around Shah Alam and Kuala Lumpur.

Eligibility and selection process:
The program is open to all undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in Malaysian society, culture, and literature. All applicants must have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. Students must also successfully complete a pre-departure orientation during the spring quarter before departure. Interviews may be conducted to assess interest and willingness to live in a different culture. A 500-word personal statement must also be included in the application process.

Students on judicial probation at the start of the study abroad program will not be allowed to participate; there is an appeal process for those with B-level violations. Click here to read the entire judicial policy.

Pre-Departure Preparation
Students selected for the program will participate in several pre-departure orientation sessions held during Spring quarter.

Living arrangements
Students will stay at Crystal Condominium, an international students' housing of UiTM. These are fully-air-conditioned apartment units with shared and single bedrooms. A Malaysian Food Court with American fast food restaurants like McDonald's, KFC, and Pizza Hut are all within walking distance. A Malaysian lunch will be provided for the students. Students will be responsible for their own breakfast and dinner. There is a vibrant downtown area in Section 7 and Section 2 of Shah Alam where UiTM students (both international and local) and students from nearby universities congregate.

Courses and credits
Students will enroll in 5 credit hours for this program. Undergraduate students will receive credit for INST 390 and graduate students will receive credit for INST 590. The name of the course is Tun Abdul Razak Seminar: Malaysia Society and Culture.

Entry and exit requirements
U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport when traveling outside of the United States. If you plan to study or travel abroad in the next year, apply for your passport now.

Some countries also require a visa to legally enter and reside in the country. Please review the entry and exit requirements for Malaysia. US citizens will not need a visa or other special documents to enter the country for the length of this program. (Please note: If you plan to travel before or after the program, you may need a visa). You may need to show sufficient funds to support yourself while in-country.

Please also note that visa requirements may vary if you plan to stay in the country longer than the program dates or travel to other countries during or after the program. Please familiarize yourself with these recommendations and requirements prior to applying to a program.
