Filmmaking in Malaysia

Students from the School of Media Arts & Studies will produce a short narrative film based on "Home for Hari Raya," a short story by American/Ohio ex-pat Robert Raymer, a writer and teacher who has lived in Malaysia for more than 20 years. Mr. Raymer enthusiastically supports this endeavor and has featured the project on his personal blog.

OHIO students will work in collabortaion with a group of students from UiTM. These students will serve in various support postions such as asociate producers, location managers, casting directors, production crew, actors, etc.

 

Program dates:
December 15, 2012 - January 9, 2013

Eligibility and selection process

This program is open to all Ohio University students at the undergraduate and graduate level. The minimum GPA for admission consideration is 2.5 for undergrads and 3.0 for graduate students. Admission to the program will be based on academic performance, letter of reference and an interview. This program accepts Non-Ohio University students.

ALL students must attend 6 orientation sessions during fall semster in order to participate in this program. After being accepted into the program, participants will work with the program director to schedule sessions.

Students who have a judicial record and will be on probation for a judicial offense at any point during the program may petition to study abroad. Click here to read the entire judicial policy.

Living arrangements

The students will stay at Crystal Condominium, an international student housing complex at UiTM. These are fully air conditioned apartment units with 1 master bedroom with private bathroom and 2 single rooms with a shared bathroom. A few group meals will be provided, but students are responsible for most of their meals. A Malyasian Food Court with American fast food restaurants is within walking distance. There is a vibrant downtown area where UiTM students, both international and local, congregate.

Courses and credits

Students will earn a total of 6 semester credits.

Student will choose one of the following courses:
Intermediate Video/Audio Production
Digital Cinematography
Special Topics: International Producing

All students on the program will take the following course:
Special Topics: Malaysian Culture through Film

Excursions

Students will spend two nights in Penang, taking part in a homestay program. Each student will live with a Malyasian family for the weekend. A one day field trip into Kuala Lumpur is also possible.

Requesting accommodation for disabilities

If you plan to participate in an Ohio University-sponsored study abroad program and wish to request accommodation, you should contact the Office of Disability Services (ODS) to schedule an appointment to complete an Education Abroad Disability Accommodation Request Form. We recommend you do this as early as possible to allow sufficient time to determine what accommodations may be made for this program. 

Entry and exit requirements

U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport when traveling outside of the United States.  If you plan to study or travel abroad in the next year, apply for your passport now.

Some countries also require a visa to legally enter and reside in the country.   Please review the entry and exit requirements for Ireland. US citizens will not need a visa or other special documents to enter the country for the length of this program. (Please note: If you plan to travel before or after the program, you may need a visa).  You may need to show sufficient funds to support yourself while in-country. 

Please also note that visa requirements may vary if you plan to stay in the country longer than the program dates or travel to other countries during or after the program.  Please familiarize yourself with these recommendations and requirements prior to applying to a program.
