Teach in Ghana participants have a unique opportunity to gain real teaching experience while exploring the rich culture of this West African nation. Students are placed in primary, junior or senior high schools and develop cross-cultural teaching skills that are becoming increasingly important in today’s U.S. schools and classrooms. Through full immersion in the placement schools, at home and on weekend excursions, participants will learn from and about Ghanaian people, culture and traditions.

Eligibility and selection process
This program is open to upper class Education majors and to students of all majors who have experience teaching or working with young people. Successful participants must be energetic and open-minded. Applicants are required to have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.75.
Students who have a judicial record and will be on probation for a judicial offense at any point during the program may petition to study abroad. Click here to read the entire judicial policy.

Living arrangements
Each student will be placed with a Ghanaian family in either a rural or urban setting, and will be treated as a member of the family. The student will have his/her own bedroom and the family will provide breakfast and dinner.

Courses and credits
Students must register for a full-time load of undergraduate or graduate coursework. Among the courses offered are:

AKAN 1110/5110: Elementary Akan Language (4 credits)
AKAN 2110/5210: Intermediate Akan Language (4 credits)
EDAD 2520: Administration of Education in Non-Western Cultures (3 credits)
EDAD 4200: Comparative Cultures and Education (3 credits)
EDAD 4900: Special Topics in Education Administration (1 to 15 credits)
INST 1100: Introduction to Africa (3 credits)
INST 2100: Africa’s Children (3 credits)

This program may also fulfill the Professional Internship requirement for Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, or Adolescent to Young Adults (AYA) Education. Students must have this approved by the College of Education in advance.
