Teach in Ghana

Cape Coast, Ghana

Teach in Ghana participants have a unique opportunity to gain real teaching experience while exploring the rich culture of this West African nation. Students are placed in primary, junior or senior high schools and develop cross-cultural teaching skills that are becoming increasingly important in today’s U.S. schools and classrooms. Through full immersion in the placement schools, at home and on weekend excursions, participants will learn from and about Ghanaian people, culture and traditions.
Eligibility and selection process
This program is open to upper class Education majors and to students of all majors who have experience teaching or working with young people. Successful participants must be energetic and open-minded. Applicants are required to have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.75.
Students who have a judicial record and will be on probation for a judicial offense at any point during the program may petition to study abroad. Click here to read the entire judicial policy.

Living arrangements
Each student will be placed with a Ghanaian family in either a rural or urban setting, and will be treated as a member of the family. The student will have his/her own bedroom and the family will provide breakfast and dinner.

Courses and credits
Students must register for a full-time load of undergraduate or graduate coursework. Among the courses offered are:

  • AKAN 1110/5110: Elementary Akan Language (4 credits)
  • AKAN 2110/5210: Intermediate Akan Language (4 credits)
  • EDAD 2520: Administration of Education in Non-Western Cultures (3 credits)
  • EDAD 4200: Comparative Cultures and Education (3 credits)
  • EDAD 4900: Special Topics in Education Administration (1 to 15 credits)
  • INST 1100: Introduction to Africa (3 credits)
  • INST 2100: Africa’s Children (3 credits)

This program may also fulfill the Professional Internship requirement for Early Childhood, Middle Childhood, or Adolescent to Young Adults (AYA) Education. Students must have this approved by the College of Education in advance.

  • EDPL 4580: Professional Internship - Early Childhood (6 credits)
  • EDPL 4590: Professional Internship - Early Childhood (6 credits)
  • EDPL 4610: Professional Internship - Middle Childhood (6 credits)
  • EDPL 4620: Professional Internship - Middle Childhood (6 credits)
  • EDPL 4650: Professional Internship Seminar - Middle Childhood (3 credits)
  • EDPL 4630: Professional Internship - Adolescent to Young Adults (6 credits)
  • EDPL 4640: Professional Internship - Adolescent to Young Adults (6 credits)
  • EDPL 4650: Professional Internship Seminar - Adolescent to Young Adults (3 credits)

Internship credits are also available for African Studies and International Field Studies.

  • INST 4910: Internship - African Studies (1 to 10 credits)
  • INST 6910: Internship - Field Studies (1 to 15 credits)

Requesting accommodation for disabilities
If you plan to participate in an Ohio University-sponsored study abroad program and wish to request accommodation, you should contact the Office of Disability Services (ODS) to schedule an appointment to complete an Education Abroad Disability Accommodation Request Form. We recommend you do this as early as possible to allow sufficient time to determine what accommodations may be made for this program. 

Entry and exit requirements
U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport when traveling outside of the United States.  If you plan to study or travel abroad in the next year, apply for your passport now: http://travel.state.gov/passport/passport_1738.html.

Some countries also require a visa to legally enter and reside in the country.   Entry and exit requirements for this country can be found at http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/travel_1744.html.  US citizens will need a visa or other special documents to enter the country for the length of this program. You may need to show sufficient funds to support yourself while in-country.  Please also note that visa requirements may vary if you plan to stay in the country longer than the program dates or travel to other countries during or after the program.  Please familiarize yourself with these recommendations and requirements prior to applying to a program.
