| This 10-day workshop gives participants first hand exposure to the splendor and biological diversity of one of the most sensitive ecological habitats in the world. Different sites on the same island or sometimes two different islands are visited daily. Information about ecology, biodiversity, geology, evolution and conservation on the islands will be delivered by faculty from Ohio University and Catholic University (Ecuador), and a Galapagos National Park naturalist guide. |
| The group will visit uninhabited and inhabited islands, giving the participants the chance to compare and evaluate the impact of human activities on these unique island ecosystems, and to discuss the struggle between economic development and conservation. There will be opportunity to explore the marine environment, as well. Snorkeling gear will be available for the participants to explore one of the richest marine habitats in the world. It may be offered during summer 2013 but a final decision has not yet been made. Eligibility and Selection Process The program is open to all undergraduate, graduate, and medical students at Ohio University or other universities who are in good academic standing. The program is also open to faculty, staff and community members. Students who have a judicial record and will be on probation for a judicial offense at any point during the program may petition to study abroad. Click here to read the entire judicial policy. Application Deadline This program operates a rolling admission procedure with applications reviewed by the course director as they are received. Students who apply early therefore have a better chance for acceptance for one of the limited slots in the program. Living Arrangements Program participants will cruise the Galapagos Islands on a 16 passenger yacht. Courses and Credits Successful completion of this program will earn 5 credits. Students will enroll in either: BIOS 492 Topics in Zoology or BIOS 682. Advanced Topics Non-credit options are available for non-Ohio University students only.
