Summer 2012

This program qualifies for the DML Scholarship! More information is available here.

Ohio University has partnered with ISA (International Studies Abroad) to give OU students the opportunity to spend five or seven weeks this summer in beautiful Florianópolis, Brazil. Students will study the Portuguese language, participate in local cultural activities within the city, and take in the natural splendor of Brazil through several excursions.

Florianópolis, or “Floripa” as it’s known by locals, is located on the Island of Santa Catarina just off the eastern coast of mainland Brazil approximately 450 miles Southwest of Rio de Janero.

As part of the program, students will participate in excursions to the Blumenau & Itajai River Valley, Serra Catarinese, Iguaçu Falls (optional, extra cost), and the Santa Catarina Coast.

Program dates:
5 week option- June 29 - August 3, 2012

7 week option- June 29- August 18, 2012

Eligibility and application process:
This program is open to all students, regardless of their proficiency level. Students will be placed into the appropriate Portuguese language class upon arrival.

Students on judicial probation at the start of the study abroad program will not be allowed to participate; there is an appeal process for those with B-level violations. Click here to read the entire judicial policy.

This program accepts Non-Ohio University students.

Application Deadline

Living arrangements:
Students will live with local host families, giving them a window into Brazilian culture and daily life. Living with a host family also gives students an opportunity to practice and refine their language skills. Host families will provide breakfast and dinner seven days a week, as well as laundry service once a week.

Courses and credits
Students will take a proficiency exam upon arrival and be placed accordingly.

In the 5-week option, all students will take intensive language and culture classes at the Universidade do Sul de Santa Catarina.

In the 7-week option, students will take the 5-week program outlined above; following this, students will enroll in a 2-week long intermediate or advanced level Portuguese conversation course.

Undergraduate students will earn 11 credit hours, while graduate students will enroll for 9 credit hours. An elective course in History (taught in English) is also available.
