The Ohio University Department of Modern Languages offers intensive study of French language, literature, culture, and civilization during spring quarter in France. Avignon is less than three hours by train from Paris and 40 miles from the Mediterranean Sea. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the city has impressive museums and monuments and many great festivals. Excursions to such regional highlights as Provencal villages and the city of Marseille and activities including visits to the theatre or to cooking classes will form an integral part of the program.

Program length
Dates correspond closely with Ohio University spring quarter.  Program dates for 2012 are March 22 (Last date to leave the US) - June 9.

Eligibility and selection process

The program is NOT limited to students majoring or minoring in French, as students from numerous academic areas have participated. All participants are required to have completed second-year French (213) by the end of winter quarter and be in good academic standing.

Admission is selective and is based upon grades in French, letters of recommendation, level in French at OU, class rank, GPA, and a statement of interest (in English).
Students who have a judicial record and will be on probation for a judicial offense at any point during the program may petition to study abroad. Click here to read the entire judicial policy.

Application deadline

Living arrangements
Students stay in French private homes.  Breakfast and dinner are provided.  Basic linen necessities such as towels, bed sheets, and blankets are also provided.  Two students are often placed in the same family.  Most homes are located within walking distance of the university and the city center (20-30 minutes at the most).

Courses and credits

Students in the program will enroll in a selection of the following:
FR 343: Advanced Grammar and Composition
FR 348: French Civilization
FR 435: Proseminar: French Literature
FR 435: Proseminar: Oral and Written Production
FR 432/532: Proseminar: Cinematographic and Literary Memories of the French Resistance

All participants must register for and attend ML 250B (a 1-4 credit hour class) during the program.
Additionally, all students applying to the program must register for ML249 in the winter (more details about the class will be available toward the end of fall quarter).  This course will prepare students for their experience abroad and will include graded assignments relative to such preparation.

Excursions

Excursions to such regional highlights as Provencal villages and the city of Marseille and activities, which include visits to the theatre or to cooking classes, will form an integral part of the program.
