Teacher Preparation

The Patton College has a strong tradition of being a leader in innovation in teacher education. We have offered teacher candidates at Ohio University substantive field experiences at our laboratory school since 1925 and through our public school partnerships for over 30 years.

Our accrediting body, the National Council of Accreditation for Teacher Education, has recommended that clinical experiences be put at the center of teacher education. This is an affirmation of our belief that teaching is learned best through doing.  In response, we now require a yearlong clinical experience of all of our undergraduate and graduate teacher candidates.  Together with our school partners we are engaged in continuously improving our teacher candidates' clinical experiences at the undergraduate and graduate level.  Today we offer an intensive clinical model for teacher preparation.
