The Mission

The mission of the Physical Activity and Wellness (PAW) Program is to help students gain the knowledge and skills necessary to develop a lasting interest and appreciation for attaining and maintaining personal health and wellness throughout their lifetime
 

Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the physiological, psychological, and socio-cultural factors that influence human well-being and affect the major health problems of our society
  • Students will be able to identify the components of health-related physical fitness and the relationship to personal health and wellness
  • Students will develop and enhance physical fitness through lifetime physical activity or sport participation.
  • Students will be able to identify how adopting healthy lifestyle practices will lead to lifelong fitness & wellness.
  • Students will be able to identify and describe rules, history, safety, and etiquette in the respective physical activity or sport. *

Course Composition

Courses will combine instruction of a physical activity or sport and health and wellness curriculum, delivered on-line. Individual courses will carry one hour of graded academic credit that will count toward the required total for graduation and for the determination of full-time status in the semester in which the course is taken.

Fitness
 

PED 1000 - Exercise & Conditioning – This course will teach how to build muscle, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness by using body weight baring exercises, aerobic exercises and circuits, and Nautilus equipment. Exercise and weight-room safety and etiquette will also be addressed. Physical participation in these workouts will be expected. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1001- Aerobic Conditioning – This course will teach and instruct on the basics of aerobic fitness training and conditioning. This includes body weigh exercises, aerobic exercises within a gym, intensity training, plyometric training, and aerobic conditioning circuits. Exercise safety and etiquette will also be addressed. Physical participation in these workouts will be expected. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1002- Circuit Training – This course will instruct on how to appropriately use the Nautilus exercise strength equipment to improve muscle balance and endurance and how to build strength. Upper body, lower body, and core machine exercises will be addressed as well as how to create an appropriate training circuit to reach fitness goals. Physical participation in these workouts will be expected. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1003- Weight Training – This course is intended to introduce the techniques, skills, safety, and general concepts of weight training. Students will learn how to properly use free weights while creating and following a fitness program. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1004- Jogging – This course is intended to introduce the basics of form, technique, training concepts, drills and etiquette associated with distance running and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge that allows effective and safe running training. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1005- Yoga – This course is intended to introduce the history, background and basic postures of yoga. The fundamental poses: open awareness, standing and plank, balance, and floor poses will be covered in this course as well as inversions and relaxation methods. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.
PED 1006- Pilates – This course is intended to introduce the history, background and basic exercises of Pilates. The main focus of the course will be on how to use the body and gravity to strengthen the body's core muscles – abdominals, back, and hips and overall posture and composition. The goal of this course is to learn how to improve strength, flexibility, and coordination through specific exercises. Participation in the exercises is required. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1100- Basketball – This course is intended to introduce the rules, history, strategy, skills, and general concepts of basketball, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective play and understanding of the game. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1102- Softball – This course is intended to introduce the rules, history, strategy, skills, and general concepts of softball, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective play and understanding of the game. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1103- Fundamentals of Volleyball – This course is intended to introduce the rules, history, strategy, skills, and general concepts of volleyball and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective play and understanding of the game. Bumping, setting, and hitting techniques will be addressed as well as offensive and defensive strategies. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1104- Ultimate Frisbee – This course is intended to introduce the rules, strategy, skills, and general concepts of ultimate frisbee, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective participation and understanding of the sport. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1105- Broomball – This course is intended to introduce the rules, strategy, skills, and general concepts of broomball, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective participation and understanding of the sport. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1106- Ice Hockey – This course is intended to introduce the rules, strategy, skills, and general concepts of hockey, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective participation and understanding of the sport. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1107- Indoor Soccer – This course is intended to introduce the rules, history, strategy, skills, and general concepts of soccer, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective play and understanding of indoor soccer. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1108- Soccer – This course is intended to introduce the rules, history, strategy, skills, and general concepts of soccer, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective play and understanding of the game. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1109- Flag Football – This course is intended to introduce the rules, strategy, skills, and general concepts of flag football, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective participation and understanding of the sport. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1110- Team Handball – This course is intended to introduce the rules, strategy, skills, and general concepts of handball, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective participation and understanding of the sport. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1200- Fundamentals of Racquetball – This course is intended to introduce the rules, history, strategy, skills, and general concepts of racquetball, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective play and understanding of the game. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1201- Fundamentals of Tennis – This course is intended to introduce the rules, history, strategy, skills, and general concepts of tennis, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective play and understanding of the game. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1202- Fundamentals of Golf – This course is intended to introduce the rules, history, strategy, skills, and general concepts of golf, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective play and understanding of the game. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1203- Badminton – This course is intended to introduce the rules, history, strategy, skills, and general concepts of badminton, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective play and understanding of the game. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1205- Cycling

PED 1206- Bowling – This course is intended to teach: the basic form of bowling, rules and etiquette of the game, bowling techniques, scoring, and improve the bowler's skills through practice. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1207- Fundamentals of Handball – This course is intended to introduce the rules, strategy, skills, and general concepts of handball, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective participation and understanding of the sport. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1208- Archery – This course is intended to introduce the rules, strategy, skills, and general concepts of archery, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective participation and understanding of the sport. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1219- Disc Golf – This course is intended to introduce the rules, strategy, skills, and general concepts of disc golf, and to provide an appropriate level of knowledge and skill that allows effective participation and understanding of the sport. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1300 - Aqua Aerobics – This course is intended to teach the basics of aqua aerobic conditioning exercise including: shallow water lower and upper body exercises, shallow water cardiovascular exercises, deep water upper and lower body exercises, and deep water cardiovascular exercises. Other topics to be addressed will be: how to properly use water resistance for muscle building, injury recovery fitness through aqua aerobics, aqua tools (underwater weights, float belts, noodles, etc.), and motivation techniques. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1301- Fundamentals of Swimming – This course is intended to introduce and teach basic technique for front crawl, backstroke, breast stroke, side stroke, and butterfly. Breathing and flip turns will also be addressed. This courses purpose is to provide an appropriate level of knowledge that allows effective and safe swim training. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 1301- Fundamentals of Swim Conditioning - This course will cover the basics of creating swim workouts including drills, kick sets, and main anaerobic and aerobic sets. It will also address: the components of a cardiovascular exercise swim training program, how to create and build a daily swim workout, how to build a weekly and monthly swim workout plan, and swim injury prevention. The class will consist mainly of cardiovascular swim conditioning participation. Knowledge of and correct completion of the basic swim strokes is required. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 2301- Intermediate Swimming – This course is intended to continue technique instruction on the four basic swim strokes and further instruction on the sidestroke, diving and flip-turns. This courses purpose to enable correct swimming technique of each stroke, so continuous swim workouts can be participated in. Critique and practice will be included throughout the course. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.

PED 2302- Intermediate Swim Conditioning

PED 2801- Advanced Swimming – This course is intended to continue technique instruction on the four basic swim strokes, diving, and flip-turns. It will include practice and critique on the swim strokes and allow extensive practice through swim workouts. Additionally, basic concepts of health and wellness will be covered in the online portion of this class.
