Wilderness First Responder June 18 – 25, 2012 Program/Supply Fee: $220.00 Undergrad. This course is the perfect course for anyone working in a position of leadership in an outdoor setting or for individuals who want a high level of wilderness medical training for extended personal backcountry or expeditions. The course is 72-80 hours long (7-10 days) and follows the SOLO curriculum. The course is a comprehensive and in-depth look at the standards and skills of dealing with: Response and Assessment, Musculoskeletal Injuries, Environmental Emergencies and Survival Skills, Soft Tissue Injuries and Medical Emergencies. The subjects are covered far more extensively covered and there is much more hands-on practice than our 2 day course. Additional topics, such as CPR, are also included. Upon successful completion of the written and practical examinations, you will receive a 3 year WFR certification through SOLO and a 2 year Adult & Child CPR certification through the American Heart Association. Outdoor Leadership July 2 – 27, 2012 Program/Supply Fee: $695.00 Undergrad/Grad. The Recreation Studies program is sponsoring a 25-day Wilderness Education Association National Standards Program course designed to teach students the knowledge and skills required for effective outdoor leadership. Successful completion of the course results in outdoor leadership certification. The course consists of two separate expedition phases. The first phase of the course will be spent backpacking in Pisgah National Forest in the scenic mountains of western North Carolina. The second phase will be spent sea kayaking along the beautiful Cape Lookout National Seashore in North Carolina. Coastal Kayak Instructor Development August 20 – 24, 2012 Program/Supply Fee: $138.00 REC 327: Undergrad. Coastal Kayak Instructor Development introduces various teaching strategies and learning styles in preparing students to provide high quality instruction to beginner coastal kayakers. The student will learn to prepare lesson plans, give presentations and provide evaluative feedback to students. Successful instructor candidates must demonstrate effective group leadership skills, paddling proficiency, technical knowledge, and teaching competency. Students who successfully complete this course will be eligible for one of four levels of certification as an American Canoe Association coastal kayak instructor. The level of certification depends on the level of competency demonstrated by the instructor candidate. San Diego Sports Consulting Project June 11 - 30, 2012 (Program Dates) The SCP experience is designed to give students an opportunity to leverage their existing business skills as well as develop new ones in an exciting and challenging professional sports environment. Each team will be given a sports marketing project and will be charged with developing and implementing an approach for completing it in a fashion that satisfies its clinet as well as the course objectives. The key challenge for each team will be todecide on the appropriate plan of execution and to bring it to fruition in the time allotted, and with the resources provided. In this environment, new chanllenges, such as language specific to the professional sports environment and high levels of ambiguity, will be prevalent. The primary goal of the SCP is to provide students with an experience that they will remember as one of the most meaningful and important ones in developing them personally and professionally.
