As you enter the front entrance of Shannon Hall there is a bronze plaque that reads, “Dedicated to all the people of Belmont County who so generously contributed their time, labor and financial support to permanently secure higher education for the benefit of all.” Our founders recognized the need to provide affordable and accessible higher education opportunities to the residents of Belmont County back in 1957. Since that time, we have extended our reach into many other surrounding eastern Ohio counties and West Virginia, in what we know of as “The Valley.”
In 2007, Ohio University Eastern celebrated fifty years of service to the Ohio Valley. This publication honors the work of our faculty, staff and students during this year. However, it is work that was made possible by the foundation created by the many faculty, staff, students and community members who have committed their time and service to the establishment and maintenance of Ohio University Eastern this past half century.
My thanks to former deans Drs. E. R. Bovenizer, James Newton and Paul Bibbins for their dedicated service and leadership over the years. A thank you to Mike McTeague and Bill Willan who served as interim deans during periods of transition. I am beholden to the wonderful support and guidance provided by the dedicated members of our Regional Coordinating Council, both past and present.
We now look forward to meeting the needs of the Ohio Valley as we move on to our 51st year of providing higher education opportunities to a new generation of students. Our goal is to increase the educational attainment level of the residents of the valley so that we have a workforce that can compete with anyone, anywhere in the global economy. Together, we believe we can do this and improve the quality of life for our students, their families and our communities.
I am honored to have the opportunity to work with dedicated faculty and staff who care deeply about our students. Everyday they work hard to provide our students with a high quality, challenging educational experience that is second to none. I am grateful for students who have the courage to pursue a higher education and the families that sacrifice so much so our students might succeed in this endeavor. I invite you to come and visit our campus and see all the many exciting things that are happening at Ohio University Eastern. We, as always, are here to serve you.
Sincerely,
Richard W. Greenlee, Ph.D.
