Faculty/Student Obligations & Expectations


Faculty Obligations to Students

 

Students can expect that:

  • Instructors will provide a syllabus on the first day of class containing (at minimum) the following information:
    • Instructor's name, course call number, descriptive title of the course and catalog number of the course
    • contact information for the instructor (phone number and email address)
    • time and day of regularly scheduled office hours
    • the titles and ISBN of all required texts
    • instructor's attendance policy
    • summary of graded assignments, their weight in overall grade calculation, and due dates
    • statement on, and definition of, academic misconduct
    • statement on accommodations for disabilities
  • final exams will be given according to the OUE published final exam schedule
  • classes will meet at the times listed in the course schedule (and cannot be changed except through approval of the Faculty Chair and Associate Dean)
  • if an instructor cancels a class, the instructor will provide as much advance notice as possible, generally through email and Blackboard announcement
  • feedback on student performance will be provided regularly throughout the semester
  • instructors will be available to students outside of class be holding regularly scheduled office hours
  • instructors will make every effort to answer email messages and phone messages promptly   

Faculty Expectations of Students


Students are expected to:

  • contact their instructor as soon as practical any time the student does not understand class procedures or information presented in class
  • read their university email regularly (daily is recommended)
  • read the course syllabus
  • have access to all required course readings and materials
  • show up to class on time and prepared for the day's assignments
  • pay attention while in class, and show courtesy and respect to their peers and the instructor
  • conform to the Ohio University Code of Student Conduct
  • communicate with instructors regarding illness or other expected absences
  • be aware of university deadlines and dues dates for course assignments
  • be mindful that they represent the OUE community when working in the practical setting (internships, field trips, fieldwork, and all other off-campus curricular activities)
