August 28, 2013 : Community Auditions set for ‘The Liar’ at Ohio University Eastern

The Theater Department of Ohio University Eastern announces open community auditions for its upcoming production of David Ives' comedy "The Liar" on Wednesday, September 4 and Thursday, September 5 at 7pm in the Shannon Hall Theater.

Adapted by Ives from the play written by Pierre Corneille in 1644, this adaptation of "The Liar"was first performed in 2010.  The Wall Street Journal hailed the production: "What's the funniest play ever written?  I used to think it was "Noises Off," but now that I've seen "The Liar". . .I'm not so sure. . .I laughed so hard that I was sore the next day."

Dramatists Play Service describes the plot: "Dorante is a charming young man newly arrived in the capital, and he has but a single flaw: He cannot tell the truth. In quick succession he meets Cliton, a manservant who cannot tell a lie, and falls in love with Clarice, a charming young woman whom he unfortunately mistakes for her friend Lucrece. What our hero regrettably does not know is that Clarice is secretly engaged to his best friend Alcippe. Nor is he aware that his father is trying to get him married to Clarice, whom he thinks is Lucrece, who actually is in love with him. From all these misunderstandings and a series of breathtakingly intricate lies springs one of the Western world's greatest comedies. . ."

Roles are available for three women and five men. Scripts will be available one hour before auditions begin.   Production dates are November 14, 15, 16 and 21, 22, 23; rehearsals begin September 23.

All those interested are encouraged to audition and no previous acting experience is required.  Anyone desiring more information or anyone unable to attend the listed audition times should contact Ohio University Eastern Theater Director Dennis Fox at (740) 699-2340 or via email at foxd@ohio.edu.
