September 23, 2013 : Whitney Sage hired at Ohio University Eastern

Ohio University Eastern recently announced the hiring of Whitney Sage, M.F.A., as lecturer of art.Sage, a native of Farmington Hills, Michigan, comes to the area after spending the last few years teaching at art centers, public schools and working with the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit.

Sage holds both a bachelor of fine arts in painting and a bachelor of arts in art education from Miami University (OH), where she graduated cum laude. In 2011, Sage earned a master of fine arts from Washington University in St. Louis in studio art.

In addition to her teaching, Sage is an active exhibiting artist, having shown in galleries across the country as well as having work shown in Berlin, Germany while completing a summer residency.  Her artwork centers upon her experience as a native of metro-Detroit and the disconnect that exists between the community and the dramatized image propagated nationally.

Notable exhibitions include "Detroit: A Brooklyn Case Study" at Superfront LA Gallery in Los Angeles, California, "Right Here Over There" in Lexington, Kentucky, and "Utopia/Dystopia" at the Urban Institute for the Arts in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In addition to exhibiting, Whitney was a presenting panelist for the "How Detroit Built My Aesthetic" panel at the Mid-America College Art Association Conference, presenting her studio practice and her research in relation to her metro-Detroit upbringing. Her research and writing also led to an invitation to speak at San Jose State University's 18th Annual Art History Symposium: An Exploration of Art and Architecture.

Sage's work has been featured in a number of publications including Inklings literary journal, "Rites of Passage" exhibition catalogue, Washington University in St. Louis' "MFA 2011" catalogue, "Detroit: A Brooklyn Case Study" exhibition catalogue and the "Post-Industrial Complex"catalogue.Several of her works are also featured through the online publication, Wake: Great Lakes Thought & Culture.

Ohio University Eastern Dean Paul Abraham is glad to have Sage on board.  "Whitney has enjoyed great success as an artist and an art educator," he said.  "She comes to campus well prepared to teach our students the principles and practice of art.  We are looking forward to her contributions in the classroom and to campus life."

Sage is equally enthused about teaching at OUE.  "I am incredibly excited to bring drawing and painting arts back to the Eastern campus," she said.  "I look forward to enhancing the student base by instilling confidence and creativity to improve student learning in all areas of study."

Sage lives in Blacklick, Ohio and concurrently teaches at Ohio University's Zanesville Campus. Her personal artwork can be viewed at www.whitneysage.com.
