ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio - The Theater Department of Ohio University Eastern has "...its pants on fire," you might say, as it will present the comedy "The Liar" written by David Ives November 14, 15, 16 and 21, 22, 23 in the Shannon Hall Theater. On Thursday evenings curtain is at 7pm and on Friday and Saturday evenings curtain is at 8pm.
Adapted from a play written by Pierre Corneille in 1642, "The Liar" received its world premiere on April 12, 2010, staged by the Shakespeare Theater Company at the Lansburgh Theater in Washington, D. C. Since that opening Ives' hilarious adaptation has been performed around the country to great reviews: "A farce to be reckoned with."--The Denver Post; "If there's anything half as entertaining as 'The Liar' onstage hereabouts, I'd be obliged if someone would let me know about it."--Washington City Paper; ". . .Verbally intoxicating (sometimes exhausting) . . . which plays fast and furiously with the rhymed couplets. . ."--Chicago Sun Times.
The comic premise is very simple. Young, charming, rascal Dorante has just arrived in Paris seeking love and adventure--the only problem is he can't stop telling lies to everyone. He hires a servant named Cliton, who can only tell the truth and before he can breathe he falls in love with a woman, whom he mistakenly believes to be named Lucrece. Two hours of multiple sets of twins and mistaken identities make for an evening of raucous fun.
The OUE Theatre production, directed by Dennis Fox, will mix the old with the new. "The great fun of the play is that the language is classical verse, but the vocabulary and the ideas are completely modern-- 'The Liar' may have been written in 1642, but Ives' adaptation is absolutely 2013. I think audiences will have a ball!"
Fox has assembled a talented cast for this production. Playing Cliton is Derek Deal, of Barnesville; Deal, a Senior at OU Eastern, was last seen as Frank in "All My Sons." In the role of Dorante is Cody A Kramer, of Martins Ferry; Kramer's last role was Chris in "All My Sons." Nicole C. Lewis, of Colerain, is a Senior at OU Eastern and was last seen as Ann in "All My Sons." Lucrece is played by Cassie Bellerive, of Jewett; Bellerive is a Freshman at OUE. Playing Isabelle and Sabine is St. Clairsville resident and OUE Theatre veteran Susan L. Stepputtis; Stepputtis was last seen as Kate in "All My Sons." Eric Bonham, an OU Eastern Freshman from Martins Ferry, is cast as Alcippe; this is Bonham's first OUE role. Philiste is played by Derek De Mattio, from Richmond; De Mattio is a Sophomore at the Eastern Campus.
