ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio (March 6, 2013) - The Ohio University Eastern Cultural Life & Diversity Committee is proud to sponsor a free concert by Percussionist Joseph Van Hassel on Thursday, March 14 at 7pm in the Shannon Hall Theater.
A versatile artist in many genres, Van Hassel has performed or recorded with the Percussion Group Cincinnati, Roland Vazquez, Bernard Woma, and the Ethos Percussion Group. He has also worked with composers Steve Reich, Joseph Schwantner, William Bolcom, Erik Griswold, David Gillingham, Jennifer Higdon, John Corigliano, and Jere Hutcheson, and premiered works by Libby Larsen, Joseph Turrin, Michael Barnhart, Stuart Saunders Smith, and David Macbride. He can be heard on recordings for the Mode and Equilibrium record labels.
In addition, Van Hassel has also performed with numerous orchestras and big bands throughout the Midwest and East coast. Performance highlights include Carnegie Hall, the Cincinnati MusicNow festival, the Percussive Arts Society International Convention, the International Tuba Euphonium Conference, the Hindemith Center in Switzerland and the Juniper Chamber Music Festival.
Van Hassel is an Adjunct Professor of Percussion at Ohio University, Adjunct Professor of Music at Ohio University Lancaster, and percussion instructor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp.
He has earned degrees from Ohio University and the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and is currently an ABD doctoral candidate at the Hartt School.
