|Kuruvilla Zachariah, known as Zach to his friends and colleagues, was born in the Kerala state of India. His father was the late C. Kuruvilla of the Ottathycal family in Chingavanam. His mother is Soosannamma Kuruvilla. He grew up with his maternal grandparents, Kodathuparambil Chacko Abraham and Achukutty until the age of twelve. The family later settled at Chingavanam where he completed his eduaction at St. Thomas High School.
His undergraduate education was at St. Berchmans' College, Changanacherry, affiliated to Kerala University. Zach received a master's degree in chemistry from Ravishankaar University, Raipur, in 1970 and started his long career in academia at St.Stephen's College, Uzhavoor.
Zach was employed in Ethiopia in their secondary schools and at the Alemaya College of Agriculture of Addis Ababa University. He married Elizabeth Karottukunnel in 1976 and they both worked in the secondary schools of Kaduna state in Nigeria until 1984. Their children, Jebin and Jane, were born there. The family moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma in January 1985, and both Zach and Elizabeth attended graduate school at Oklahoma State University. In 1989, Zach earned a Ph. D. in analytical chemistry. He has also received an M. B. A. from West Virginia University. He taught chemistry at St. Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City, Kansas until 1992. Zach joined the faculty of Ohio University's Eastern campus in September 1992 and taught chemistry and business classes until his retirement in June 2012. During his time at Ohio University Eastern, Zach also served as faculty chair for three years. He has also served as the coordinator of the Technical and Applied Studies program at Ohio University. He currently holds the rank of Associate Professor Emeritus of Chemistry. Since retirement, he teaches only online courses in the technical and applied studies and the business management programs.
He is a member of the American Chemical Society. He was a member of the Bethesda-Belmont-Morristown Rotary Club of Ohio and served as its President during 2005-2006. In December 2003, the Rotary Club honored him as the Rotarian of the Year and in March 2004, he was again honored with a Service Above Self Award for his outstanding service to Rotary International projects. Zach was inducted to the "Who's Who Among Educators" in their 2007 edition.
