Russell E. Savage Jr. serves the Diabetes Institute at Ohio University in the capacity of grant writer and director of DI's Research Division. Most recently, Russ was an environmental health scientist (technical director) with ICF International, specializing in environmental health issues including risk assessments, occupational exposure limits and implementation of biomarkers into these processes. Dr. Savage came to ICF from the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health at Georgia Southern University where he was an associate professor of Environmental Health Sciences and the director for the Office of Public Health Research.

Other career experiences include acting as the associate director for science for the Division of Applied Research and Technology at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and assorted positions at other federal agencies including the United States Marine Corps (intelligence analyst), the Department of the Defense at the Aberdeen Proving Ground, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

Dr. Savage has a Ph.D. in Pharmacology and a Masters in Technical and Scientific Communication. He is a member of the editorial board for Toxicology Mechanisms and Methods and the author of numerous scientific publications ranging from basic studies on mechanisms of action of chemical carcinogens to contemporary approaches for toxicology and risk assessment.
