Instruction and Advisement

COURSES TAUGHT/BSN
Since employment at Ohio University, I have taught a majority of courses offered by the School of Nursing. I have regularly taught using distance learning modalities my time at Ohio University. Courses I have taught include the following: NRSE 300 Nursing Transitions, NRSE 325, NRSE 330 Family Nursing, NRSE 335 Legal and Ethical Issues, NRSE 340 Community Health Nursing, NRSE 405 Nursing Research, NRSE 415 Restorative Nursing, NRSE 416 Nursing Management, NRSE 445 Strategic Planning in Nursing, and NRSE 455 Excellence in Nursing. In 1993-95, I worked in conjunction with the Ohio Department of Health to develop and teach in a Public Health Nursing Certificate Program with an emphasis on Early Intervention. Other things completed: developed elective course on pain management (1995); converted didactic pain management course to a web-based course (1999); and participated in numerous service–learning course experiences. I regularly taught a Tier III course entitled Social Crisis in Health Care Policy when TIER III courses were university requirements for senior students prior to discipline specific courses now developed. I have predominately taught the undergraduate course NRSE 330 Family Nursing and NRSE 341 Community Health Nursing. I have assisted many students to complete independent studies through NRSE 490 in a broad range of topics, many related to community health issues. Teaching has been delivered in traditional formats, but also in distance learning using microwave, compressed video, online, and hybrid formats.

ONLINE TEACHING/COURSE DESIGN & DEVELOPMENT
In 2003, I converted NRSE 330 Family Nursing and NRSE 341 Community Health Nursing to online courses. During the summer of 2005, I revised the online NRSE 405 Nursing Research course. Summer of 2006, I revised the online capstone course NRSE 455 Nursing Excellence. I have used Blackboard for online and undergraduate and graduate hybrid courses for several years. I am currently working on the conversion of four online courses (NRSE 341 Community Health Nursing; NRSE 330 Family Nursing; NRSE 405 Nursing Research, NRSE 455 Excellence in Nursing) to move them to a Web 2.0 format for delivery in a new 5 week compressed format. I am also revising the core graduate courses (I.e., NRSE 601, NRSE 630, NRSE 605) to a totally online format to be used with graduate courses.

ADDITIONAL GRADUATE STUDIES and OTHER ACTIVITIES
I worked with an interdisciplinary OU College of Health and Human Services faculty group through a HRSA funded grant in a certificate program for graduate students from diverse schools pertaining to diabetes and the elderly (2001-2004). The project was A Multidisciplinary Intervention Program for the Diabetic Elderly Population in Appalachia: Preparing Professionals in Health and Human Services. My role was to assist students better understand cultural implications and family interventions for persons diagnosed with diabetes.

I collaborated with faculty from the School of Human and Consumer Science and directed the research work of two nutrition students as they completed their thesis work related to diabetes dietary routines:

  • Lyndel Schuster- Family Dietary Routines in Type 2 Diabetes (2004-2006)
  • Tammy Collier-Dietary Routines and Type 2 Diabetes: Instrument Development (2006-2007)

CLINICAL EXPERIENCES:
I have been actively engaged with many community non-profit groups and worked in community health fairs and community projects over the years of my employment at Ohio University.

Since 2004, I have been active in the quarterly Diabetes Coalition group that was started and participate in meetings linked with the Appalachian Rural Health Institute Diabetes Center at the Cornwell Center, a collaborative between Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine and O’Bleness Hospital. I regularly present at these meetings and interact with the diabetes educators primarily in assisting them to identify ways they can more effectively address family-focused care during patient education.

CONSULTATION:
(1997 – 1998), I assisted the Meigs County, Ohio Department of Health conduct a community health assessment and completed a written report for them.

(2008 -2009): Consultant employed by the National League for Nursing Accreditation Commission (NLNAC) to assist/guide the instructional design, content development, and production of the online educational program to be used to prepare new site visitors and update/review for experienced site visitors.

(2008-2009):  Participated in the Advisory Council to develop the Nursing Institute for Family and Society, the Glen Taylor Family and Society Endowed Nursing Faculty Chair, and the Becky Taylor Doctoral Fellowships in Nursing at the Minnesota State University at Mankato, MN, (MSM) School of Nursing.

International Scholarship

Taiwan (September 21-October 2, 2005): Lecture presentations on the Family Health Model, family-focused care, community mental health care, health literacy, and on-line learning to faculty members, graduate, and undergraduate students at Chang Gung University, Chang Gung Institute of Technology, National Defense Medical Center University, and National Taipei School of Nursing. All presentations were in the area of Taipei.

Mexico (December 2003): I developed an independent study course for 10 RN to BSN students for one week trip to Monterrey, Mexico during December 2003. Students in this four credit hour class compared and contrasted American and Mexican culture, health care practices, nursing development and education along with nursing as a medical practice. The students were introduced to Mexican culture and to the geographic region of Monterrey, Nuevo León. We visited a number of nursing schools and health care providers during the visit and exchanged ideas about nursing practice.

Taiwan (October 14-26, 2000): Lecture presentations in Taiwan to RNs, BSN, graduate nursing students, and faculty in schools of nursing and others: Chang Gung University, Fu-Jen University, Yan-Ming University, National Taiwan University, National Defense Medical Center, Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Center (all in area of Taipei) and Buddhist Tzu-Chi Hospital in Hualian on hospice care, pain management, and topics related to professional nursing.

Scholarly Accomplishments

Diabetes: A Family Matter
The main thrust of my scholarship from fall 2005 to the present has been the development of a culturally sensitive and family-focused program and toolkit entitled Diabetes: A Family Matter targeted for those that live in the Appalachian region of the nation. This region is comprised of parts of 12 states and all of West Virginia or a total of 420 counties. These efforts have built on earlier research work and two years of formative research that included an environmental scan of diabetes in the Appalachian region and qualitative studies about living with diabetes in Appalachia. The completed program, materials, and toolkit activities include: a web-based platform for delivery, a film entitled Living with Diabetes in Appalachia, the three SUGAR Plays, a Diabetes Educator Manual, a SUGAR Helper Manual, a series of family-focused brochures and posters, two fotonovellas, media campaign materials, and a series of Toolkit Activities. The website www.diabetesfamily.net has downloadable program and toolkit materials available online and can serve as a portal to diabetes information for those in the Appalachian region. Materials were completed through collaborations with interdisciplinary faculty, graduate students, and others. The program launched March 18, 2009 at the Diabetes: A Family Conference, Baker Center Ballroom, Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. A federal appropriation (CDC) will fund a pilot project entitled Dissemination and Evaluation of Diabetes: A Family Matter, A Toolkit for the Appalachian Region. This one year CDC funded dissemination and evaluation project will begin 9/1/2009 and go through 8/31/2010. Conversations continue with staff from the CDC National Diabetes Education Program about potential adoption of the materials for use in the Appalachian region following the dissemination and evaluation project.
