Dr. Berryman has been a member of the Ohio University faculty since 2001. She is an associate professor of food and nutrition with a joint appointment at the School of Applied Health Sciences and Wellness in the College of Health Sciences and Professions as well as the Department of Biomedical Sciences at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Berryman is a graduate of the University of Virginia where she studied biology. She completed her doctorate and postdoctoral studies at Cornell University in the Division of Nutritional Sciences.  At Cornell, she studied the interaction of lipases with cell surface receptors.  In 2001, she also completed the requirements for the registered dietitian credential.

The unifying theme of her scholarly work is obesity. Globally, her research efforts assess the nutritional and hormonal factors that impact adipose (fat) tissue and influence risk of obesity and diabetes.  More specifically, her recent efforts have targeted how growth hormone (GH) action impacts adipose tissue deposition, metabolism and function using various mouse lines with altered GH action generated in the laboratory of Dr. John Kopchick.  These mice are particularly interesting in obesity research as mice with reduced GH action are obese but relatively long-lived and insulin sensitive.  Thus, these mice offer a model in which obesity has been 'disconnected' from the deleterious health outcomes that normally accompany obesity.  Through this collaboration, her studies have evaluated body composition over lifespan, depot specific differences in fat tissue accumulation, unique secretory and cellular profiles of adipose tissue, and other factors that contribute to the progression of obesity to overt diabetes in these mice.
