AFRICAN CHILDREN AND AFRICAN MEDIA
The conference program is now available on-line! We have an exciting conference planned for June 15-18! The conference begins on June 15 with pre-conference workshops during the day. The pre-conference workshops are: "Programming for Young Children: Co-Production of Barney and Friends" by Mary Ann Dudko; "Digital Story-Telling" by Firdoze Bulbulia; "The Sister School Project: Defining Youth Media's role in Education and Advocacy" by Nicole Opper; "Animated Media Tools for 21st Century K-12 Education" by Clifford Cohen and "Education, Public Broadcasting and Children's Media" by Michael Cohen. Space is limited in these Master Class workshops, sign up early! A credit option is available.
The conference kicks off with a keynote address by Ian Smith on Thursday at 6:30 PM in Walter Hall, Room 135. Ian Stewart, the former AP bureau chief for West Africa, is the author of Ambushed: A War Reporter's Life on the Line. During his ten-year career, Stewart has worked and lived in more than 40 countries, including Afghanistan, the former Zaire, Sierra Leone, and Cambodia. A sought-after commentator on Africa and war reporting, Stewart has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, ABC's Primetime Thursday, and CNN's Crossfire. His reporting in Africa has been cited as a finalist for numerous writing awards, inclding the French-based Bayeux Award for war correspondents. In October 2000 he won the Associated Press Managing Editors (APME) Award for feature Writing.
Conference sessions continue on Friday and Saturday, June 16 & 17 with panel discussions on Violence and Trauma; Media and Education; Media, Institutions and Politics; Media, Storytelling and Literacy; Media and New Spaces; and a special storytelling session. Fredrick Nnoma-Addison, President and CEO of Africa Image TV will give the closing keynote address.
