Study Abroad

International experiences are a vital aspect of many students’ education, and IDS encourages students to seek such opportunities. However, the courses earned through study abroad experiences do not always count toward fulfillment of the IDS requirements. When choosing a program, students should consider the following guidelines:

No more than five credit hours from any single study abroad program can count toward graduation requirements, regardless of how many hours are earned.

Study abroad credit can only be counted toward Concentration Elective requirements. They do not fulfill Foundation, Development, or Methods requirements.

Every study abroad program has a course or list of courses for which students should register in order to receive credit for the trip. While these courses may not be listed on the IDS approved concentration electives list, up to five credit hours can be applied to fulfill the student’s concentration electives. To ensure that the courses will be approved, students should complete the following steps:

Make a copy of the program description for the study abroad program.

Download the IDS Study Abroad Registration form from the IDS website. On this form, complete the course numbers and credit hours that will be taken and sign the bottom part acknowledging that a maximum of five credit hours will count toward concentration electives. Obtain the IDS director’s signature.

Attach the program description and IDS Study Abroad Registration sheets and submit both to the Center’s administrative coordinator.

Certificate Programs

While pursuing the Master of Arts degree, it maybe possible to fulfill the requirements of one or more of the available certificate programs, which include Geographic Information Science (GIS), Conservation Biology, Contemporary History,Gerontology, Health Policy, African Community Health Services Graduate Certificate Program and Women’s Studies.

Seeking a Dual Degree

Some students may wish to pursue a dual Master’s degree while studying at Ohio University. The International Development Studies program is happy to assist students in achieving this goal, however certain guidelines must be followed.

1.    Admission

Students must apply to and be accepted by both programs separately. Students currently enrolled at Ohio University will not be permitted to take the IDS pro-seminar or colloquium courses unless they have been accepted into the IDS program.

2.    Course Credit Restrictions

15 hours of coursework may be used to fulfill the requirements for both degrees.  This is determined by the student completing the Dual Degree form (pick up at the Graduate Studies Office) and plotting out both degree programs indicating which courses will be used for both degrees.

If the student has completed a master’s degree from another university, he or she may only apply  up to 15 hours of course work that was  not used toward the first degree. This is a university policy.

Any courses on the student’s transcripts that would normally count toward completion of the IDS program requirements, and have not been counted toward another program’s requirements, can be applied to the fulfill IDS requirements regardless of the date they were completed. This is a university policy.

The 15 hours may be applied to any IDS requirements that they would normally fulfill. For example, a statistics class taken for another program can be counted toward the Methods Core requirements.

3.    Capstone Requirements

The student must complete separate graduate capstone projects for each degree. Many students opt to write a thesis for their first degree and complete a grant proposal or comprehensive exam to fulfill the second degree requirements, rather than writing two separate theses.
