Offset state budget cuts
It might surprise you to learn that Ohio University receives just slightly more than a third (36.7 percent) of its budget annually from the state of Ohio. Student tuition and fees provide for 38.5 percent of the budget. The remaining 24.8 percent comes from alternate funding sources, including our private donors.
As a state institution, we have an obligation to provide quality, affordable education to Ohio’s young people. However, the state is able to provide less support for this endeavor each year. In fact, since 2001, state spending on higher education in Ohio has decreased 5.3 percent.
These cuts have impacted every program and department at Ohio University. The process of considering options to meet our current and pressing budget challenges is still underway. Additional information is available on our Budget Update website, www.ohio.edu/budget/.
As the state of Ohio continues to reduce resources provided to its state institutions, the contributions of our donors will become ever more valuable. Private gifts will assist in our efforts to keep a quality Ohio University education affordable by supporting scholarships. They will assist in recruiting and retaining outstanding faculty through Endowed Chairs and Named Professorships. And, they will provide discretionary monies to departments and programs that will sustain the margin of excellence for the institution.
